  • Musical Set Design

    Funded Sep 25, 2023

Thank you so much for the wonderful donation of technical supplies for our Theatre space. They have been used many times over already and it's been wonderful to see these young artists take more ownership in the design and construction of their work.

One of my favorite things we were able to do with this donation was teach students the basics of using a drill. With the sets of drills we got through your donation, every student got to learn this necessary skill and did so safely.

As you can see in the photos, the painting supplies were used to bring bright colors to our 90s-themed set.

The foam boards and pipes were used to create what I call "The Big Toy." This set piece allowed us to spin blocks to show different pictures based on the theme of the scene. It was such a monstrous set piece to design and build but it received a lot of compliments. Once the show was over and we took it down, students were able to claim one of the blocks as a memento from the show.

Thank you again for your support. During a time when many clubs and activities are asking for financial support and donations, we appreciate that you selected us amongst the many wonderful projects happening at FDHS.”

    With gratitude,

  • Teacher Burnout Support Service Project

    Funded Apr 6, 2023

Our project has been fully funded and we are so excited for our school and what this will provide for our amazing community! Our teachers work so hard and they deserve a space for them. Thank you for seeing the value in this project and donating. We can't wait to share pictures with everyone.”

  • Pimp Our Dressing Room

    Funded Aug 1, 2019

Thank you so very much for the amazing donation. Because of you, our dressing room appears more professional and we have more resources for all the students involved in the productions. We still have to install the sound proof panels, but that will come in handy when they get noisy backstage. A few students are make-up geniuses, but for the most part, makeup is scary and confusing. Now they have the proper brushes and wipes so that show make-up is less daunting and scary. The fidget toys have been especially fun during rehearsals. The actors get anxious about lines and performing for their peers, so when they are sitting offstage waiting their turn, the fidget toys keep them occupied.

    Many thanks!”

  • Living Statue Costume Design

    Funded Sep 1, 2018

Thank you so very much for your amazing donation to our program. This was my first DonorsChoose and I am overwhelmed by the amount of support right away. For this project, the students are building Living Statues as a final product of a costume design unit. The costumes are based on the characters from J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. In the Spring, our production will be a modern adaptation of the story and to advertise for that show, these Living Statues will be out in the school to hopefully catch many students' attention. When the students first learned about the project, they were super excited but they envisioned a very minimal product. I even had a student assume that we wouldn't be body painting because it's expensive. The moment I took out the items with the body paint and fabric paint was a very exciting moment. I think the students felt more legitimate when they saw the items.

Since starting the project, the students have worked in groups to design a costume for the main characters from the story. They have measured and cut patterns for sewing the costumes. They will continue to build the costumes in groups and paint the fabric. They will then practice getting into the full living statue costume, body paint and all. The models will practice their poses for when they advertise in the halls.

In the future, I plan to use DonorsChoose for more hands on projects for the students. Sometimes with projects, we can discuss how something could be done but we don't always have the chance to try and practice. I look forward to creating more fully realized projects through DonorsChoose.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tyo

In many big cities Gold, Silver and Bronze sculptures are a part of the landscape of the city. But sometimes those sculptures move, dance or wave to capture the attention of unsuspecting tourists passing by. But how do these street artists create such detailed characters? My theatre students will be tackling the art of Living Statue. This project covers many great topics for theatre artists. They will have to employ their play analysis skills to discover important details that guide their costume renderings. They'll be working in groups to construct the designs using found objects and the materials requested. The students will also be learning about entrepreneurship as Living Statue is an opportunity for freelance work for city events, parties, galas and more.
