I will use the the graphic novel March by John Lewis in order to stir conversations around social justice and equity in America. The civil rights movement is a compelling part of our history to examine as part of our curriculum because it is as relevant in 2019 as it was in 1964. Many students take their civil rights for granted and as a result are not as fully engaged in the current events of our times as they should be. They need to understand the hardships that were endured in order to promote a new and energized conversation around race and gender issues in the United States. I love teaching our students because their voices matter. When they understand the power of an individual voice in our collective history they are more likely to use their own for positive social change.
