  • Staying Cool While Racing the Sun: Solar Car Cooling System

    Funded Jun 4, 2020

Thank you again for your generous support through this DonorsChoose campaign. This fundraiser allowed us to purchase the fans, ducts, hose clamps, and vents for our solar cruiser cooling system. We will be incorporating this cooling system into our car so that we can keep our driver and their passengers comfortable while competing in this national competition.

While we are closed due to COVID-19 and we are unable to physically work on the solar cruiser, my students are still making progress by using Computer Aided Design to model every component of the solar car in Fusion360. When we do begin physically working on the car again, things will go together much more quickly.

While next year will not look the same, we are working on a plan with our administration to be able to safely come back and continue working on Florida's first solar cruiser. We cannot wait to get back to school!

Thank you for your help. My students and I truly appreciate your help in this ambitious endeavor.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Phipps

  • Help Build Florida's First Solar Cruiser

    Funded Feb 25, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous support through this DonorsChoose campaign. This fundraiser allowed us to purchase the solar panels for our solar cruiser. My students were beyond thrilled when the SunPower flexible 170W solar panels arrived. These flexible panels will allow us to make an aerodynamic body for our car, thus improving its performance.

Our school, like so many others, has closed due to COVID-19. This summer's competition was also postponed to July, 2021. While our school has been closed and we are not able to physically work on the solar car, the team is still making progress through Computer Aided Design. My students continue to design parts for our solar car that they send to me to 3D print as prototypes so that, when we do begin physically working on the car again, things will go together quickly. I am amazed at their determination and dedication to this project, even in times such as these.

While next year will not look the same, we are working with our administration to devise a plan that will allow our students to safely come back to school and continue working on building the first solar cruiser 4-seater solar car in the sunshine state! We can't wait to get back to school!

Thank you for being a driving force behind this project as I inspire, motivate, and challenge the next generation of engineers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Phipps

My students are tackling issues of energy efficiency and showing the viability of alternative energies by building a solar cruiser to compete in a national competition. Unlike typical solar race cars, a solar cruiser is a 4-seater solar car that best represents a solar commuter vehicle. We will be the FIRST in Florida to build and race a Solar Cruiser in the Solar Car Challenge! This year's race will be at the Texas Motor Speedway. Next year, our solar cruiser will go from Ft Worth, TX to Boulder, CO over a 7-day cross-country race! The solar panels my students have researched and selected are highly efficient and flexible so they will fit the curvature of our solar cruiser. They are also lightweight which is an additional bonus. My students are spending hundreds of hours on this project to design, build, and race a full-size custom-made solar cruiser. Large-scale project-based learning where my students focus on systems thinking truly prepare them for the STEM workforce!
