My students in my Academic Studies period are an even mix of both 9th and 10th graders. They qualify for special education services because of their individual disabilities, which encompass a wide range of cognitive and physical impairments that impede their ability to access and/or comprehend the curriculum. Their needs are diverse and therefore require versatility in instructional styles. Special Education at California High School uses the co-teaching model. I work with three different English teachers, co-teaching in each of their classrooms. Each teacher has their own style of teaching, and use co-teaching strategies that complement both of our styles. I also teach one period of Academic Studies in a classroom shared by multiple teachers who rotate through each period.
