The physical setting of the learning environment is extremely important for the students to increase motivation and encourage participation in order for them to better engage in learning. Tables, desks, and bookcases, as well as special needs equipment, are very difficult to find in our school. While occupational therapists are always finding inexpensive and creative ways to adapt items to meet the needs of their students, some items such as furniture and chairs are just too difficult to adapt or create. My students need an adjustable activity table, a sensory chair and fidget tools for our occupational therapy room. Our current table is being held together by duck tape to prevent injury to the students. The kids make the best of it and continue to work hard. Students learn best through hands on experience and a new table will help them improve through interactive learning. The adjustable legs will allow flexibility for smaller and larger students and allow us to adapt to their physical limitations. A new table will promote social interactions between peers and help my students work on play, sensory, motor, and organizational skills. Fidget toys can help students cope with stress and feelings of restlessness.
