When it comes to teaching Spanish I always make sure to emphasize to my students that is so much more important to focus on what we can do with the language than simply knowing about the language. Being able to communicate in another language involves listening, reading, writing, and speaking but at times it can often be difficult to get students to engage with reading. If a student isn't a huge fan of reading in their first language then reading in another language can sound even worse, but I have seen the power of a student picking up the right book having intentional time to read without strings attached, and seeing growth in their skills Reading has been shown in numerous studies to be one of the best ways to acquire language naturally due to the repetition of structure and the plethora of examples of everyday structures and skills found in dialogue and narration. In class right now we often have an independent reading time where students get to choose what book to read as well as reading as a class, in which we read a novel together and do lots of conversational questioning about what is happening and how we connect to the story! In our classroom library right now we have some Spanish novels that are leveled so students can read and practice in class when we have intentional reading time, but it has always been a battle between students over the 3 or 4 graphic novels that I have in Spanish because students love the visual connection when they read. With this project, I hope to expand our classroom library to include these awesome Spanish graphic novels so students have even more choices during our free reading time.
