School is starting again soon. As I prepare centers, purchase supplies and begin thinking through lessons, I’m also thinking of ways to expose my students to the skills necessary as 21st century scholars. Technology is a necessity! My students loved when they heard the technology cart coming around the corner to our classroom. It was not a daily occurrence but they loved using computers. They didn’t realize that utilizing technology consistently would help them build fluency, comprehension, phonemic awareness and phonics. In a state where many schools are moving technology to a 1:1 ratio, my students don’t have that privilege! Our elementary/middle school of 400+ students has only a few technology carts that rotate around the entire elementary/middle school. In order for them to have consistent access, they need devices for just our class. In my classroom setting, it is necessary to differentiate learning for English Language Learners, special education students, on grade level students and those that are far below grade level. All of these students need varying strategies to reinforce core teaching in the classroom. Tablets can be a great tool for the more kinesthetic and visual learners and will be used during small group rotations . They also provide for visual cues which are beneficial for beginning readers. Furthermore, the wealth of apps available can supplement individualized reading instruction as well as math instruction.
