The students I teach have varying learning disabilites that impact their social skills and language development. A large part of how they learn is through visual and kinesthetic play. My curriculum each month has a different theme, such as School Tools, Community Helpers, Farms and Friends, and Under The Sea, just to name a few. A lot of time is spent finding cardboard boxes, butcher paper and paint to create engaging themed centers. Because the children enjoy them so much, and are so excited to play with them, they have proven not to be as durable as I would like them to be.
Having these new dramatic play tents, my students will have more opportunities to have extended play, build language and communication, be encouraged to take turns and share, as well as how to care for toys and items that they love and enjoy playing with.
