  • Sensory Calming Light Table and Manipulatives for Improved Academics

    Funded May 24, 2024

I cannot begin to tell you how amazing it is to see these kids faces light up when they are learning with this new sensory table and manipulatives. The students are excited to come into the therapy room and start their sessions. The students are motivated to use their fingers to work on their finemotor skills as well as love using the table at the end of the session to help calm themselves down before going back to class. This table has been an wonderful addition to our room and the students benefit greatly from its use, it encourages them to be more independent with self regulating and also helps them show their creativity when they come up with ideas on how to use it. It is a great addition to our calm down corner and it's made a huge difference in the way the students are learning. Thank you so so much, non of this would be possible without you the donors. The kids greatly appreciate it and so do I.”

  • Independent Self Regulation to Promote Improved Academics

    Funded May 8, 2024

Thank you, once again for your generous donation. It puts a great big smile on my face to see my kids walk into the OT room everyday and see that they are enthusiastic to learn and excited to use the new bubble fish tube. The kids now walk in, see it and know that if they need to use it, all they have to do is ask. The kids especially love to use it last 2 -3 minutes of the ot session to just turn the lights off in the room, and watch the fish and the lights for calming to return to class. The special needs student that I work with are also motivated to use this new tool to help them refocus during activities that are challenging or cause them stress. After using it for a few minutes, the students are able to refocus back to task. The students all comment on how cool it is, and can't wait to use it the next session.”

  • Hands-on Learning & Sensory Experiences Equals Success

    Funded Aug 16, 2023

I wanted to say thank you again for making this project a reality for my students. I'm excited everyday to go to work and see how happy and motivated my students are to learn in ot utilizing these new therapy tools. The students are so proud of all their accomplishments when they are in their therapy sessions. Utilizing the hands on approach and sensory tools helps my students regulate themselves so that they are ready to learn and make progress towards achieving their ot goals. Everyday is a new adventure in learning and helps the students build up their self esteem. This would not be possible without your help. Words can't express how much it means.”

  • Tech Solutions for Special Needs Students!

    Funded May 6, 2019

Thank you so very much your this most generous contribution to our occupational therapy department. The iPad has become such an invaluable tool for therapy use and the kids just love it. The I pad is a gift that just keeps on giving. It has been useful to use on an individual basis in our therapy room and also when we push into the classrooms with the students. It is also a great way to engage a small group of students to collaborate and socialize together. We have been using the iPad to improve handwriting skills. Letter formation skills and pre writing skills. We have been using the iPad to work on visual perceptual and eye hand coordination skills. These are all skills necessary to be successful with school work and to be independent within the school environment. The I pad has been used to improve fine motor and cutting skills as well as improve the ability to follow step by step directives to complete a task. The possibilities are endless. It's a versatile tool that makes learning fun. It is something that I can see being used for years to come. It makes therapy fun and not seem like work.

I just love to see the kids faces while they are engaged in their therapy session. The iPad seems to grab their attention more so then some of the traditional therapy activities. I enjoy the fact that I can mix the two for a multi sensory approach to learning. I think the most exciting part of the iPad for my students is that it makes them feel more empowered and as though they are in charge. Gives them a sense of independence or the ability to make their own choices. I'm also finding the students who are usually quiet are seemingly opening up and coming out of their shells being more vocal and showing excitement when they are doing well at an activity.”

As an occupational therapist in one of NYC's high-needs schools, I encounter struggling students on a daily basis. My children not only experience an environmental disadvantage, but often physical, mental, and emotional disadvantages as well. Many do not have access to computers, tablets, or even developmentally appropriate toys at home. They come to school having had limited exposure to these things and thus are limited in their development. It is my role in the school to help them overcome any hurdles that they face when trying to be successful in their classrooms. With diagnoses such as ADHD, autism, language impairments, and learning disabilities the hurdles are high and numerous. With iPads available my students will be able to access various educational and therapeutic apps to help them catch up with their non-disabled peers. In addition we all know how motivating technology is to all children regardless of their functional ability. My students will not only benefit educationally from your donation, but will also have access to something they love and otherwise may never experience. Thank you in advance for helping me and my students achieve success within NYC's public education system!
