Fun Times in First Grade
Funded Feb 28, 2022The funding of this project brought in some much-needed science books and materials for my students. We got new books about matter, safety goggles, iron filings, magnets and much more. The students love to use magnets, so you can imagine their excitement when we opened the box that day. They could hardly contain their excitement.
We are about to start the unit on magnets and force once again. I can't wait to use these materials with this new group of students.
Thank you so much for supporting my classroom and my students. We appreciate you so much.”

Ready, Set, Back to School
Funded Jun 7, 2022Thank you so much for your donation. We used the googly eyes and construction paper to make spiders for the month of October. They accompanied our writing of an informative report about spiders. The googly eyes were especially important because spiders have between 8 and 12 eyes!
When the materials arrived we opened the box together. We passed around the items so the students could look at them. The students all had great ideas about what we could do with all the new craft supplies. They're especially looking forward to using the glitter.
Our next big project will be turkeys and then December decorations. Thanks to you we have all the items we need.”

Mrs. Garcia
Moving Forward in Math
Funded Sep 26, 2021The students were so excited to get the boxes of math materials. We sat in a circle, opened the box and passed the items around for everyone to get a look at them.
We immediately put the supplies to use during whole group instruction, as well as math centers. The puzzles are perfect for partner work and the work mats are great time-savers for me to use during whole group time.
I plan to make another Donors Choose project to get even more than games and supplies.
Thank you so much for your generosity!”

Making a Cozy, Creative Space
Funded Jul 29, 2021We are loving our new items in the classroom. The new, green rug has made our library area look wonderful and we use it on a daily basis. The cactus curtains and backdoor mat also add to the cozy environment I have been trying to create, not to mention the cactus light and the other decor that came because of your donation.
We have put many of the arts and crafts supplies to good use as well. The students used Play-Doh and craft tubes a few weeks ago to make "turkey traps" in a STEM activity. We also used the water color paper to make bluebonnet art after reading "The Legend of the Blue Bonnet". I'm so thankful for all these little extras, as it allows us to do some really fun extension activities in the classroom.
With the Fall weather, rains occasionally come. I am happy to report that the new puzzle and blocks have been cheerfully used during indoor recess time and the students have greatly enjoyed them.”

Creative Mornings in First Grade
Funded Nov 28, 2017Thank you so much for your donation. We have been using the supplies in our "Morning Boxes", as was described in the original proposal. Once I received all the materials, I wrapped them up in a giant box and put a bow on it. I explained how we had received the items and why, and then we opened up the box together. Each student was able to see every item that we received and discuss how they imagined we could use each one. It was very exciting for all of us!
Morning boxes have been a real positive in the classroom. Each morning the students arrive to find a different box on their table group. There is often an assignment attached to each box, such as "Build something from space with these tiles" or "Make a creature out of Play-Doh and then write down 5 adjectives to describe it". The children wait eagerly in line to get inside the classroom, excited to see what box they are going to receive that day. It has turned into such a creative and collaborative way to begin each morning.
Morning Boxes have been so successful that I am already thinking of other materials that we could add to the boxes for next year. I'd like to get a few more sets of some of the same things (such as Magna Tiles) we received this time so my students could create even more elaborate designs.
Thank you so much for making this possible. We could not have gotten here without you.”

Little Eagles Soar to Reading Success!
Funded Sep 23, 2016We want to thank you for your donation!
The vast majority of your donation is being used during Language Arts. We received a box full of mentor texts for our very own classroom. We no longer have to share with others, or go without, when we are doing projects or learning new skills. The large, magnetic white board and word family puzzles are being used during our Word Work centers. The dry erase "dots" are being used during Guided Reading. We received another tablet in this donation, so now we have three in the classroom. We use the tablets to play word and math games, listen to books and watch science videos. We also received privacy partitions, which has really allowed us to concentrate on our exams and other assignments when needed.
Thanks again for your support. We are so grateful to have people like you cheering us on and helping us acquire the skills and tools to be successful student and life-long learners.”

Buzzing About a New School Year!
Funded Jul 30, 2015When the majority of our boxes arrived, I put them into one large box and wrapped it like a present. I then showed the students the box and had them write about what they thought was inside. Their predictions were funny! We then sat down together and opened the present. Each student go to touch and observe each item in the box and they were beyond excited about it.
My students are currently using the tablets in reading and math centers. They listen to books, play phonics games and go to math game websites. They love it! The art supplies and books have been used numerous times already and on rainy days they make for great recess activities.
Due to this project, my students are using tablets to advance their English reading skills, not to mention their ability to use technology since many do not have access at home to such devices. The craft supplies have allowed us to do enrichment activities here in the classroom that support their learning in reading and math. The books have been a great addition to our library and our independent reading time.
Thank you so much for your generosity. It is greatly appreciated by both me and my students. Know that you are making a difference in the lives of 19 kids.”

Mrs. Garcia
These Bumblebees Need More Books to Buzz About!
Funded Dec 11, 2014We received the books in a few different shipments. Each time a box arrived it was incredibly exciting. Our first box contained over 30 books. I had the students sit on the carpet with me and we opened the box together. I wish you could have been here to hear the "oohs and aaahs" of the students as I showed them each new title! This scene was repeated as each new box arrived. After opening a box I would have to allow some time for the students to examine the books, ensuring that each student was able to peruse each new title. It was time well-spent. Their excitement over new additions to our library was contagious. They were extremely happy!
Every student in the room has a "browsing box" where they place 8 books that they want to read for the week. They read these books during Independent Reading time. They are also required to write about the books, making connections and analyzing the content. These new books are utilized each and every day. I also use the books during Read Aloud time.
These new books have really boosted our exposure to Spanish non-fiction books. This genre is particularly difficult to find and you have enabled my library to grow in an area where we most needed resources. I have a number of boys in the room that don't love to read. The addition of books about animals and vehicles has had a positive effect. I have students begging for free time to sit around a just read a book. It's a teachers dream come true!”

Mrs. Garcia
