  • Help First Graders Become Readers and Writers

    Funded Feb 9, 2011

Thank you so much for your very generous donation. It is a great surprise to receive the email saying my project has been funded. In these hard times, when education is getting cut, all of the extra support is so appreciated.

With your donation our class received journals to do daily writing, a word family pocket chart and word family journals. We also got the 100 Things About Me Journal and the My Writing Words journal. These are all fantastic tools I can use to teach them how to write as well as get them excited about writing. In addition to the writing journals and tools, we received the Silent E Strips and Compound Word games.

The kids get excited to use new materials. These really encourage them to write. They were excited when it was writing time. They did not want to stop writing, which is very inspiring for a teacher. Thank you again!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Chavez

  • Thematic Unit Learning Centers for Fabulous First Graders

    Funded Dec 1, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation. I am still amazed that there are people out there like you. I guess there really are people who will donate their own hard earned money to teachers they have never met. As you know, we spend a lot of our own money on supplies, so it's nice to receive new things and not have to beg the district. This donation allows me to buy other things that are needed for the classroom.

I received the complete set of Thematic Learning Units from Lakeshore. The units consisted of Plants, On the Farm, In the Ocean, Healthy Food, My Neighborhood, My Family and Me, All About Seasons and Bugs. Each unit has a Science, Math and Language Arts game. Four children can play each game. They are so have so much fun playing with their friends that they don't even realize they are learning at the same time.

When I do center time and read with individual students, I know that the rest of the class is busy and engaged in learning activities. They are quiet, busy, engaged and learning. They do not bother me or the other children because they are having so much fun.

I want to thank you again for your generosity and wonderful gift. When I tell friends and family about the donation, they are shocked that people actually give money to people they have never met. This is a wonderful gift that you have provided. I am greatly touched. My students appreciate it as well!

I received many math games, puzzles and listening center activities through your donation. Here is a list of the things we got as well as how they are used in the classroom. First we got a listening center kit that includes 4 lessons: Simple addition, patterns, sorting and numbers. Four children can do the lesson at a time. We then got a set of 10 partner learning games. The topics are measurement, time, graphing, money, simple addition, sorting, numbers, patterning, shapes and counting. They love these. The last thing we got were 7 different puzzles. 3 are on money and the other 4 are on patterns, shapes, counting and addition. They can also do these in very small groups.

When I do center time and read with individual students, I know that the rest of the class is busy and engaged in learning activities. They are quiet, busy, engaged and learning. They do not bother me or the other children because they are having so much fun.

  • PE and Recess Equipment for Energetic 1st Graders

    Funded Nov 8, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation. I am still amazed that there are people out there like you. I guess there really are people who will donate their own hard earned money to teachers they have never met. As you know, we spend a lot of our own money on supplies, so it's nice to receive new things and not have to beg the district. This donation allows me to buy other things that are needed for the classroom.

The PE activities and balls are fantastic. The kids have had such a great time playing with them at recess and during our PE time. We no longer just stretch and play boring tag games. We actually have real balls, jump ropes and hula hoops.

We received many different types of balls and activities. The children have had fun playing with the jump ropes, hula hoops, soccer balls, basketballs and bouncy balls. They love the soccer and basketballs. Then we also got a bunch of bouncy balls. They practice throwing, dribbling and catching the balls. They also practice teamwork.

I want to thank you again for your generosity and wonderful gift. When I tell friends and family about the donation, they are shocked that people actually give money to people they have never met. This is a wonderful gift that you have provided. I am greatly touched. This will help them get exercise, thus learn better in the classroom. My students appreciate it as well! These kids are so used to sitting all day in school and then at home in front of the TV or video games. These activities will help me teach them the importance of moving and how much fun you can have while moving.

    Thank you!

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Chavez

  • Weekly Readers for 1st Graders

    Funded Sep 8, 2010

Thank you so much for the Weekly Readers. The children love reading them. So far we have read about firefighters, sickness, pumpkins and Veteran's Day. We get 4 a month. Each packet comes with a mini-magazine for each student, a big teacher edition and reproducible worksheets. They also include a science mini-magazine. We usually read them as a group and I follow along with the big book. Then I let the kids break off into small groups and they read their favorite parts again. Once we are finished I pass them along to 2 other first grade classes. When they are finished with them I send them home with MY students so that they can share them with their families.

The Weekly Readers are great because we hit current events that I may otherwise not have time for. There is such an emphasis on reading in my district. I can still teach the current event because they are reading about it. They feel like grown-ups because they are reading magazines like their parents.

I want to thank you again for your generosity and wonderful gift. When I tell friends and family about the donation, they are shocked that people actually give money to people they have never met. This is a wonderful gift that you have provided.
