  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers & our Civil Rights Project!

    Funded Jun 4, 2012

The best thing about the chromebook is that it is classroom friendly. The chromebook system can be managed by a teacher, there is less accessibility because of hard drives to have uneducational uses. The cool thing also with the chromebook is it requires your own personal log in at the very beginning and so the same computer can have 100 different users who create their own ecosystems on the computer (documents, pictures, apps, etc) but once you log in- everything refreshes to your own system. This fosters student creativity, customization and culture. Every student can create their own unique learning environment. And this goes to the heart of the library of books that you have generously donated to us to create a library of civil rights books. Civil rights is about fighting for your individual rights, expressing yourself, and the First Amendment. They say a pen is mightier than a sword and today it is a laptop that is mighter than a pen! And so your incredible investment has helped to save a school and revolutionize a curriculum. Thank you.”

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers Civil Rights Project Part 1

    Funded Jun 4, 2012

Thank you so much for the chromebooks and the books on civil rights. Together they will make a powerful combination in our curriculum by building a public speaking and oratory curriculum. We will be having our debaters study and memorize speeches on civil rights and then have a classroom speech contest and public exhibition. This is a necessity because there are very few public speaking and oratory opportunities available for Title I schools especially South Bronx schools. But thanks to your investment and Donors Choose we can change this. Thank you so much!!!”

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers Civil Rights Project! Part II

    Funded Jun 4, 2012

Thank you so much for investing in a chromebook and books for our school! Why the Chromebook? The Chromebook is the first truly cloud computer that allows a student to access any educational content for free. Many schools are overwhelmed by viruses, software updates and other problems with laptop operating systems. Whereas the Chrome requires near zero maintenance. Tech experts say that for an entire year they will never have an issue with a chromebook. Additionally the chromebook is the fastest computer available. A student simply has to close the lid and it automatically shuts down and log off. A student simply has to open the lid and it automatically turns on. Once you log in, all your personal features become functional. Finally, Google has an infinite number of free educational applications available. Therefore, the chromebook with the addition of the books on civil rights creates a powerful combination for our students to use in the classroom.”

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers Civil Rights Project Part III

    Funded Jun 4, 2012

Thank you so much for supporting our project to support a civil rights education at our school. Our school have very few programs and opportunities available for a civil rights education. With your investment we can apply technology to make a difference! Laptops will allow students to research about civil rights issues, will allow students to watch speech and debate videos of civil rights leaders, will allow student to record their own speeches on civil rights, write their own speeches on civil rights - the sky is the limit.

In our debate competitions many of our students apply their civil rights education to change the discourse and dialogues of debate tournaments by bringing in all their knowledge and books read. And so thanks to your investment our students can continue to make a difference!

    Sincerely,

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers Civil Rights Project #3

    Funded May 4, 2012

Thank you all so much for your continued investment in our civil rights and technology program. Thank you for providing an additional laptop so we can provide a 1-1 student-computer ratio at our school. The vast majority of the schools in our area cannot afford such. Students do not have access to computers. And if they do they are like our regular desktop computers that have been around for over a decade - are slow, have viruses, limited software and simply not very usable. With the chromebooks we have access to a computer that requires no maintenance, has wireless updates, has free software that we do not have to purchase, quick start up and unlimited educational resources and applications. This has revolutionized our curriculum - particularly the focus of this project which is bringing the best civil rights education opportunities to our classroom. Thank you so much for your incredible support and most of all your continued support! Thank you!”

  • Skype in the Classroom, Part #1

    Funded May 11, 2012

We are very excited to work with Skype for the first time! Skype Classroom is revolutionizing education by connecting educators, students and knowledge across continents in seconds. When I was a student one of the most exciting opportunities was having a pen pal from another country. Messages would take weeks or months however. Now we can connect in less than a second - and not just written messages but actually see each other! And while this has infinite classroom advantages - as a debate coach the largest is the opportunity for online video debates. We cannot wait to take advantage of debating across continents!!!! Our students will learn so much and there will be no financial limitations or other glass ceiling that we will run up against. All we have to do is Skype on our new laptops provided thanks to Skype, David and Donors Choose. So thank you so much for making this happen and breaking down the walls of our classroom ad school and so we can learn with the world! Thank you!”

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers Civil Rights Project! Part 2!

    Funded May 4, 2012

Thank you so much for supporting our civil rights and technology program at our school. Our debate team in addition to regular classes and students benefit from this because each weekend they apply arguments of the civil rights movement and history in order to win debates. These arguments include critical legal studies, critical race studies, ethnic students and other civil rights arguments to win over other teams. Our students would not be able to research or argue these positions without your support. But thanks to you they have the best opportunities to read, write, listen, analyze civil rights literature, articles, news, books, and ebooks. And I have to say that civil rights literature increases their engagement and interest because of its direct application and relevance on their own lives. And so they will take the books, videos, and online learning modules - and continue learning at home and at weekend tournaments. Such resources have made our program great and we were recently recognized as one of the top after school humanities programs in the nation. Thank you.”

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers Civil Rights Project!

    Funded May 4, 2012

Thank you so much for providing our school and students with the best civil rights opportunities. Because of your resources in technology and books we have been able to revolutionizing the teaching of civil rights in our school. Students have access to the best technology which opens up any door to learning about civil rights. A laptop also can teach every 21st century skill including reading, writing, researching, philosophy and more! Thank you for providing not one opportunity, not two, but so many computers for our school. Each laptop opens up a world of opportunity for dozens of students each day. All our other school computers are over ten years old! Internet is slow, programs and software are rare or extinct. The Chromebook allows us to access hundreds of the best education applications for free. And without all the problems of traditional computers with viruses, updates, etc. This allows our students access to every aspect of the civil rights movement from research to websites to blogs to podcasts to ebooks and more! Thank you!”

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers Civil Rights Project!

    Funded May 4, 2012

Thank you so much for your incredible support for our civil rights and technology program. Our school is roughly half Hispanic American and half African american and so every subject connects to civil rights whether it is African American mathematicians to the Harlem Renaissance in American History class to Critical Legal Studies in debate and law classes. We have found that teaching civil rights across the curriculum enhances student interest and learning across subject areas. In particular, the importance of teaching civil rights history. Because of the lack of a civil rights curriculum and focus because of standardized testing and standardized curriculums - civil rights education is not much of a priority in many schools. but thanks to you we can offer the best civil rights education opportunities to all students. Thank you!”

    Funded May 11, 2012

African American History Month in February passed, but there were few academic opportunities for students to engage in. And so we proposed our first project in collaboration with Pricewaterhouse Coopers and David to change this. We wanted our students to study Black History - not just during Black History Month, but every day. And while we cannot afford teachers, curriculum, books and other resources - thanks to you we have a computer that can connect us to the world for free. The results have been amazing with our students using computers to connect with Black History research, speeches, writings, blogs, books and more. And for that reason we have proposed expanding the project and indeed thanks to you both we have been able to do so. Thank you so much! ”

Hi! I teach the high school and middle school law and debate classes at my school. I also coach the debate team for 6th-12th graders. We are one of the few urban public schools with a Debate Team. We started the Debate Team with a handful of students. Today, there are over 100 students on the Debate Team, making us the largest urban debate team in New York City and one of the largest urban debate teams in the country. I have students from special education to Honors. They are all united by their passion for speaking, debating, and learning. This passion combined with the support of Donors Choose has empowered our students with numerous skills - argumentation, rhetoric, public speaking, writing, researching, note taking, listening, technology, philosophy, political science, economics, geography, public policy, etc. As a result our debaters have won numerous local, state and national championships. Thanks!
