  • Overcoming Bullying With Townsend Press!

    Funded Nov 30, 2012

Thank you so much for our project against Bullying in Schools! Just today in the New York Post was an article that violence in several NYC was worst than many of some of the most violent countries in Africa and the other parts of the world. The root causes stem from how our students interact with each other. Elementary and middle school students guided by bullying, aggression, and fighting only add to these terrible statistics in violence. And so thank you so much for offering the resources to make a difference through books and through technology to positively impact our students. Thank you so much!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Fogel

  • Disney's Great Environmental Debaters!

    Funded Dec 3, 2012

Thank you for providing medals for our Environmental Debates! The #1 issue in our community is the environment - there are no green spaces, the South Bronx has one of the nation's highest asthma rates, schools are built on the top toxic landfills, and experts call our neighborhoods a "food desert" where there is a lack of organic, natural, fresh food and instead fast food and junk food can be found cheap and easy on every corner. We face an environmental crisis in the South Bronx and so it is imperative that these issues are addressed. Unfortunately, they will not be addressed in the traditional school curriculum - and so our debate tournaments and after school programs are central in our students and future leaders in engaging in debates, learning about environmental issues, and proposing public policy solutions. So thank you so much for providing the resources to make this a reality so that our students are talking, debating, writing, listening, researching, note taking, reading, thinking, and advocating about the environment every single day. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Fogel

  • Disney's Great Environmental Debaters!

    Funded Dec 3, 2012

"Hello, I am 12 years old, and I am a debater. When I got my first trophy it was amazing. I felt like a queen. That trophy was the first trophy I have ever gotten in my life. That trophy changed my life forever."- Anissa P., 6th Grade, Great Debater, Family Life Academy Charter School

Thank you so much for supporting our Great Debaters and providing a free debate tournament for students in NYC!!!

Unfortunately, most schools in New York City cannot afford debate programs. A successful debate program would cost between $50,000-$100,000 to hire a professional debate coach, register for tournaments every weekend (up to $100 per debate team of two students), hotels, transportation, meals, books, computers, supplies, summer debate camps, and more. Indeed, for the past several decades only the top schools and wealthiest schools in New York had debate teams. In the largest school district in America with over a million students and hundreds of schools, less than a dozen schools had debate teams. Only four of these schools were Title I low income schools. This is an education travesty.

And so thank you so much for supporting our program to change this!!! Our students are so excited after winning their first trophy and would wear their medal during school or take their trophy home to parents and then share the next day with their friends at school! What more can you ask for from learning?

Why Debate? Debate since Socrates has been THE most rigorous academic program for all students. No one said this best than NYU President John Sexton who was a champion high school debater and a debate coach for 15 years. According to Mr. Sexton, "Those 4 years in debate were the educational foundation of everything I did. And I don't mean that in some simple form...I'm saying the finest education I got from any of the institutions I attended, the foundation of my mind that I got during those 4 years of competitive policy debate." Or take Sonya Sotomayor, a high school debater from the South Bronx whose passion for argumentation took her to law school and today the first hispanic Supreme Court Justice. Indeed, "In America, education is the great equalizer. And in our urban high schools, competitive debate is one of the great equalizers of educational opportunity." (Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education)

And so thank you for supporting a new generation of debaters and a new generation of leaders! Thank You!”

  • Chromebooks for All!

    Funded Jan 1, 2013

Thank you so much for providing chrome books for our classroom so that every student can access a computer. In the 21st century - the computer is one of the most essential tools for learning from research in any subject to typing to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) to creativity and critical thinking skills. With a touch of a button a student can have the most recently updated textbook, the most powerful calculator, the answer to any question, a videoconference with a professor in Paris to any other opportunity for learning.

And the chrome book is the best device on the market to do this - affordability, accessibility, easy maintenance, the infinite world of Google apps which are free, and a device built for teachers and students. Additionally, Google provides numerous affordable and free workshops for teachers to provide

Based on my classroom use of the computer - my school has decided to invest in Chromebooks for the entire school! So thank you for not just impacting my classroom, but also for impacting my entire school - and also for impacting schools, teachers and classrooms across the nation. Thank You.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Fogel

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers & Civil Rights Part V

    Funded May 24, 2012

Thank you so much for your investment in laptops for our school. The number one skill in schools is typing. Typing is essential to (1) every student should learn it to excel in school; (2) productivity - you can increase the speed of classwork and homework completion; (3) necessity - the 21st century business and technology world requires basic typing skills. Unfortunately most schools do not offer typing programs. Therefore we thank you so much for providing us with laptops so that students can practice typing skills. Additionally, thank you so much for the books on civil rights. These will definitely enhance our civil rights education program.”

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers Civil Rights Project Part IV

    Funded May 24, 2012

Thank you for investing in a Chromebook for our classes. Google is building an entire educational infrastructure around their products including conferences, teacher networks, professional development opportunities and more. And there's so many other reasons why the Chromebook is quickly becoming the #1 classroom choice for computing. Last summer I was honored to attend the Google Summit for Teachers in California. I was further honored by being chosen for a VIP tour of the Googleplex conference center. But the best experience was observing and learning how teaching and learning went onto Google. They did not have closed work places and cubicles like the typical business or classroom environment. They had open spaces, lots of food, lots of play, lots of amenities so that their workers were constantly engaged, productive, happy, satisfied, energized. Additionally, thank you so much for the books on civil rights. Every day is a civil rights struggle at our school, in our community, in the South Bronx and in New York City. And so thank you for providing the resources to help empower our students and next generation of leaders.”

  • Civil Rights & Pricewaterhouse Coopers!

    Funded May 24, 2012

Thank you so much for the Chromebook. In the classroom, every second counts. And so a regular laptop requires minutes to boot up and if it freezes or something else happens in the operation of - it will require another boot up and another. And so you are looking at 5-10 minutes of just staring at a blank computer screen. Whereas for the chromebook you are looking at mere seconds. Therefore, your investment will have infinite return value by creating the most efficient and quickest educational tool. Thank you so much. Also, thank you so much for the books on civil rights. Our school has only started implementing a civil rights curriculum thanks to the resources of Donors Choose.”

  • Pricewaterhouse Coopers & Civil Rights!

    Funded May 24, 2012

Thank you so much for providing such incredible resources to our school. Schools of the 21st century by necessity must have 1-1 computer ratios. A computer opens up the world to a learner - any subject, any lesson, any topic is made accessible by the internet. This ranges from advanced placement to physical education classes. Therefore, we thank you so much for helping us build an infrastructure for a computer curriculum at our school.

Additionally, thank you so much for the civil right education books. We have an 800 student campus but a one room library and therefore we need every book that we can get! But where civil rights is an every day struggle and lesson - these books will help in our classes and general student empowerment.”

Hi! I teach the high school and middle school law and debate classes at my school. I also coach the debate team for 6th-12th graders. We are one of the few urban public schools with a Debate Team. We started the Debate Team with a handful of students. Today, there are over 100 students on the Debate Team, making us the largest urban debate team in New York City and one of the largest urban debate teams in the country. I have students from special education to Honors. They are all united by their passion for speaking, debating, and learning. This passion combined with the support of Donors Choose has empowered our students with numerous skills - argumentation, rhetoric, public speaking, writing, researching, note taking, listening, technology, philosophy, political science, economics, geography, public policy, etc. As a result our debaters have won numerous local, state and national championships. Thanks!
