We are a part of a gloriously diverse community. Though our resources are limited, our students are excited about learning and being a part of our school. Most of our students receive free and reduced lunch, many are homeless and a huge number of our families are new immigrants and refugees. Hence, there are many students without books and bookshelves at home. To bring literacy and reading into their homes and to their families is an essential part of developing skills and building the foundation for literacy and learning. Our library is in a classroom. It is small and the collection is outdated and doesn't meet the needs of our diverse learners. There are so many fantastic books that I want to share with the students, and instead, I find myself reading and rereading the "classics" from our collection when our budget runs out. Reading is the foundation of our community. I hope the library can soon reflect that.
