The idea for this project came to me after reading a current event article with my students. The article 'Classroom tries out comfortable seating inspired by Google offices, originally published by Los Angeles Times, and adapted by Newsela staff on 2/21/2018, described a classroom of a fourth-grade teacher who had a bean bag chairs, rocking chairs, as well as high and low tables in her classroom. My students were excited to hear about this and asked why they did not have these options for their classroom. I tasked my students with the assignment of first drawing their ideal flexible seating classroom and then writing a letter to our principal to persuade her to allow flexible seating in our school. Students were excited about the opportunity to have a voice in their classroom set up. In the drawings and descriptions of students' ideal classrooms every one of them included a carpet work space with bean bags. Middle schoolers struggle with the transition from an elementary classroom, where they have more flexible seating options, to middle school classrooms where they are expected to sit in desks all day. I would love to bring my students' ideal classroom to life by adding these items to our room.
