  • Fresh and Diverse Graphic Novels for Ninth Graders

    Funded Dec 31, 2024

Thank you so much for supporting a much needed classroom library refresh! My students start ninth grade English class with 15-20 minutes of independent reading time three days a week. They cherish this calm and productive time to read any book of their choosing!

Although many of my students love to read YA and classic novels, I do have a need for graphic novels, as well. These are such helpful tools for students who are still struggling readers, or have reading disabilities. The photos reinforce the story line and can help them predict the meaning of words they don't know. Also, I have students who sometimes lose or forget their book at home for the day. Graphic novels can be read really quickly on instances a student just needs a one or two day read. Finally, as an arts school, my students love to study the illustration and design styles of other artists. They often light up when they can copy or learn from another illustrator who has been published.

Again, thank you so much for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

  • Cozy Reading Corner Furniture

    Funded Aug 1, 2023

Still to this day we are using and loving the furniture we got from this project! Our pink couch is the center of our room, and students are still filled with excitement when they get to use it!

Over the past year, I've seen students finish many books on this couch. I've seen them take a quick nap during lunch after staying up all night. I've seen friendships form over casual conversations. I've watched teamwork make the dream work as students use clipboards and a comfy seat to solve hard problems on their homework.

Everyday this comfortable space brings students joy, all thanks to your donation!”

  • Creating a Reading Escape for Students

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Thank you so much for creating a cozy reading vibe in our classroom. Our new classroom rug has entirely brightened up the space, allowed students a place to work and read comfortably on the floor, and created a space that feels like our designated "reading corner." So many students lit up when they saw our new colorful rug and said it seemed like it has been here all along.

Additionally, the books requested in this project are already flying off the shelves. Students immediately reach for new covers, and the graphic novels are especially captivating for them!”

  • Food Education in English Class

    Funded Aug 13, 2023

Thank you so much for your donation to food education in my class! Last year we used every item extensively all year to teach and learn English concepts through a food lens. One of my favorite lessons of the year used the cutting boards and safe knives from this project. We bought 35 pumpkins to share among 60 students. In class, we had been reading "Braiding Sweetgrass" and students learned the indigenous growing process of squash and pumpkins. We carved our own pumpkins to celebrate halloween, but they separated and saved the seeds and flesh. We roasted the flesh and created energizing pumpkin protein balls the next day. Then we roasted the pumpkin seeds to eat as a healthy snack, while also saving some to plant at our school. Lessons like this occurred all year, thanks to you!”
