I work with some amazing students who are extraordinary in my specialized Autism classroom for the elementary level. This project can help me give them art and music experiences in their classroom. While our school has art and music classes, these classes can be overwhelming for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. In addition, some students I work with are highly motivated by art and music activities, and need access to them much more frequently than 1-2x a week.
Art activities help my students develop their fine motor skills, and give them an outlet to express their feelings. Art activities also expose sensory and tactile sensitive students to a wide variety of smells, textures, and sensations, which can generalize to helping them tolerate new things in other environments.
Music activities are highly motivating for my students, several of whom receive Music Therapy. Having an autoharp and glockenspiel in my room provide instruments that are easy to play, and have a high rate of success. Recent research found that musical instruments helped students with autism in developing joint and peer attention, which are foundational social and communication skills!
Help me give my students access to a wide range of art and music activities that we can adapt to their needs. Thank you so very much!
