  • Readers in the Making!

    Funded Jul 25, 2018

I first want to start off by saying thank you so much for your donations and being part of truly changing what it means to be a student in my classroom. Many of you who donated maybe grew up loving books, but the reality is that for my students, reading is the hardest thing they will be asked to do during a school day. For my seventh graders, reading is like climbing a mountain that they keep stumbling on.

The change I have seen in my students' engagement with reading from these new books has been amazing. They are super excited to be the first ones to read the brand new books. They are excited to have options to read in my library. And more importantly they are excited to read. They finally trust me - reading can be fun!

Every student in the seventh grade is required to have a reading book, which for many of my low income students would a taxing request. Therefore, they all check out books from individual teacher's libraries. In my classroom, on Fridays we devote 40 minutes to just reading our books! They LOVE coming in, and knowing that they will finally get to finish that chapter, or grab that new graphic novel that someone just put back on shelf! The students are literally on a waiting list for some of our hot books such as the Amulet series, Baby Sitter's Club, Baby Mouse, and the Hunger Games!

Thank you so much for becoming part of what sparked a love of reading once again for many of my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ventura

My students are in need of books! They are eager to learn, but they need the access to books that meet their independent reading level needs. I have readers that span from k-11 grade, so we need a library to help us narrow the gap! Some of my struggling readers love the graphic novels, while the more advanced ones are longing for series books like The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and the lovely John Green books! These books will give my students the library they need to continue flaming their curiosity while helping us narrow our reading gaps! Your help will give my students a library that they want to access, with books that are culturally and socially relatable to who they are. Students will be able to use these books for independent reading at school and at home so that we can continue working to narrow our reading gaps, but also to ignite a love for books!
