Our school is one of two elementary schools in a public school district of New York. The school serves a rural community consisting of ab students in grades Pre-K to 5th grade. 30% of our student body receives free or reduced lunch. Our school is also the hub for the elementary special education program in our district. We have a program designed to assist kindergarten students with autism cope with the transition from Pre-School to a full day school program. Districts with high rates of poverty are likely to have more than a third of their students considered overweight and obese, according to data from the state Health Department. Recently it was reported that 40.2% of our district's student body is overweight. The Physical Education department is gaining steam, but needs a large amount of equipment to support our efforts.
