Healthy Snacks for Title I Students!
Funded Jun 13, 2024Your generosity has a DIRECT impact on my students! Our Title I school is located in the heart of the lowest-income zip code in the state of Florida. Over my teaching career, I have learned that providing healthy snacks is one of the most important learning tools my kids need, as many deal with food insecurity. You're having a great impact on their ability to learn and succeed! Thank you again.”

Healthy Snacks for Title I Learners
Funded Mar 23, 2024I am writing to tell you about how you have directly impacted my students and their ability to thrive!
First of all, you should know about our background: Griffin Middle School is situated in the lowest-income zip code in the state of Florida. 100% of our students are on the Free/Reduced Lunch Plan. Our kids face a lot of challenges before they even enter the classroom! We serve many children who face food and housing insecurity, yet are still expected to show up to school every day to learn and meet rigorous educational standards.
One of my most vital classroom supplies are healthy snacks, and I've spent years trying to buy them myself. It's impossible to afford by myself, but I did it anyway, often to my own financial detriment. But I didn't want to stop helping feed my students; it's too important. That's when another teacher told me about DonorsChoose.org!
When I told my students that I had started a fundraiser for classroom snacks, their jaws dropped! They asked every single day when the snacks would be here. One day, in the middle of a lesson, I got a call to my classroom phone, and the front office reported that I had several boxes waiting downstairs. I just looked up at my kids and said, "Guess what?" A couple of them asked, "Are they snacks here?" I just smiled, and they burst into cheers! It's not just about the food; they feel loved and cared about. They couldn't believe that people they don't even know wanted to send them snacks so they could focus in class. We paused everything just to unpack the boxes and load up my storage shelves.
We always start class with a warm-up activity or something motivating such as "Random Applause," or "Where do you stand?" (They get to stand on their chairs or crouch down to show their level of agreement with different statements). After I introduce their reading or task for the day, they get started, and I walk around with my snack-basket. They each can choose one snack. In the photos I've attached, you'll see my kids working with focus and diligence, surrounded by granola bar wrappers and Welches Fruit Snack bags. They are fueled, they are focused, and most importantly, they feel loved and cared about. They know that I consider their needs important enough to reach out for help in meeting them, and they are much more able to value themselves and their success because of it.
I know some teachers raise money for really cool things such as Science projects, technology, field trips, and more. But please don't underestimate the incredible value of providing healthy snacks to food-insecure students!! Their success starts in their ability to learn in class every day, and meeting this need for them has been a game-changer. I know I have written a lot here, but I still cannot adequately describe how meaningful your help has been to my students, and to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Title I Girls Soccer Essentials!
Funded Dec 28, 2022I am writing to tell you about how you have directly impacted my student athletes, and given them a rare opportunity!
If you've ever participated in athletics, you know that it can be expensive. Our school provides as much as we can, but students have to acquire at least some of their own shoes and gear just to be able to participate in most sports. With our population, this is a difficult ask. Many students don't bother trying out for our various teams because they won't be able to afford it.
This is my 4th year coaching girls soccer at Griffin. Students have been asking me about soccer since the first week of school! I began holding early interest meetings and put the word out to the kids: Don't worry about gear. If you want to play, come on!
"What about shin guards? I don't have any." Don't worry about it!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of those people and companies who gave to our team through DonorsChoose, I had a record number of girls try out for the team this year! These are students who have always wanted to play a sport, but never had the chance. You gave them the opportunity!
Over half of the girls had never played soccer before but gave it their all during tryouts and practices. They truly appreciated the opportunity afford them by having all the gear provided. I remember the day we opened up the new shin-guards was like Christmas morning! When the girls dressed up in their full uniforms for the first time, you could feel the change in the air and in their spirits.
This has become such a loving, cohesive, and supportive team! We began with a lot of beginners, but they learned skills very quickly, especially with the support of their Captains and coaches. Everyone looked out for each other and helped each other grow. And I am proud to say that WE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP!! Their success is thanks, in part, to your contribution.
I have so much more to say, but this letter is already crazy long! Just please know that it is indescribably huge how you have helped students participate in a sport this year. These are students that normally wouldn't be able to participate at all! You have changed their lives! The 6th and 7th graders are all excited to come back next year and play soccer for us again! Those who had never played before have now discovered a love for the sport. You helped do that for them! That's huge!
With all my heart: Thank you!”
