My students are young and ambitious, but many struggle with the harsh realities of growing up in a low-income urban setting. In addition, a great number of my students are English language learners, which means not only do they struggle with the typical challenges of being a teenager, but they also must do so while learning a new language. In the face of all of these challenges they have all chosen to attend a school that greets them each day with high expectations. Each of my students plans on attending college, and the vast majority of them will be the first in their families not only to go to college, but to graduate from high school.
