My first-grade students crave comfort and choice as they move along their day with their learning. This includes allowing them a bit of autonomy as they LOVE to choose where they will complete their assignments. Currently, we have a cold tile floor and the kids would truly benefit from two cushy beanbag chairs and a nice cozy, new rug to lay or sit on while they read or write with clipboards. These would be work location choices for center time, reading time and writing time as an alternative to sitting in desks. Why not sprawl out? I know I work better when I’m not confined and feeling a bit more free! As for the bins...children need an individual location to store their leveled book bags, headphones and work folder. Classroom efficiency and organization would be greatly improved with a systematic approach to storing belongings. No clutter, piles or twisted headphone cords in my classroom, please! An organized classroom means children are focusing on their work activities, in a neatly organized environment conducive to learning.
