  • Supplies for Plant Grow Lab Donated by Disney!

    Funded Oct 22, 2013

Thank you for your donations. My student's are setting up our grow lights with the new humidity tent in order to start our seedlings! They are surprised with every delivery to the classroom. Even the potting soil was exciting for them!

We have just received the last of the deliveries and we will soon start our planting. We will start by sorting and classifying seeds according to their characteristics. Next we will predict what factors affect seeds' sprouting, and after that we will be studying what living things need in order to survive.

Besides the supplies (pots, soil, seeds), the humidity tent will really allow us to have better success than we had last year. We had a real problem with our seedlings drying out over the weekends and vacations. Looking forward to getting our hands dirty!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Giroux

  • Mobile Plant Lab

    Funded Feb 21, 2013

My students are really enjoying and learning from the mobile grow lights! The first step for the students was putting the light lab together. It took a little engineering and a lot of teamwork.

Next the students filled containers with soil and planted tomatoe, cilantro, and Zinnias (something they can bring home). Our big project is starting Luffas then planting them outside for the summer.....hopefully harvesting them in the fall!

We are so lucky to have the opportunity to grow plants in our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Giroux

This classroom project was brought to life by Disney.
My students are 6th, 7th and 8th grade special education children. I teach Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science to these forty students in a substantially separate classroom. All of my students have learning disabilities and come from a low socio-economic school district where many of them have very few real life experiences to apply to their academic learning. Most of them live in multi-family housing or apartments with little to no outdoor living space. My students have many gaps in their education due to their learning disabilities, their transient life styles (moving with their parents from town to town or in and out of the country), and/or their lack of parental guidance. They tend to love science and are so interested in hands on activities and labs that they haven't been exposed to in the past.
