Can You Read or Hear Me?
Funded Jan 26, 2024I started at this school 3 years ago in a classroom with little to no supplies and even less books. I teach a subject that is required. Many of the students have a great disdain for reading books much less novels. As a 9th grade intensive reading teacher, it is imperative that students not just read but comprehend what they are reading. The task of teaching students who hate reading so much is great especially when the resources are so few. The classes started reading the first novel in the series and it became a class favorite. Students who hated reading now were asking if they could take the book home and finish reading it before class. Some students finished reading that same day and were begging for the next installment. That is when I created this Donor's Choose Project to see if we could acquire a class set for the two remaining book in the trilogy.
I teach intensive reading to students that with emotional and behavioral disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), intellectual disabilities as well as specific learning disabilities. Most of the students have limited cognitive abilities, some mental illnesses, and short attention spans making reading problematic for them. My school has a population of 98% of the students on free or reduced lunch. Most of my students have limited access to book and struggle to read and as a result.
Your donation allowed students access to the series they enjoy and gives me as the teacher the tools to help them continue learning. Thank you for your very generous donation to my students and in taking an interest in the lives of my students. As a reading teacher, having access to great books that students actually enjoy reading is so exciting. Knowing that the students will want to read fills me with joy. Knowing that that your donation can turn seemly uninterest reading students who struggle to read into readers truly fills me with immense happiness.”

Funded Apr 19, 2023I would like to take the time to express just how much your donation to my class has meant to my students and me. Many of my students don't have access to much food at home and school is the only place where they get to eat most of their daily meals. These snacks have been such a blessing in their lives. To see how their eyes light up when getting to choose snacks from my class panty, is truly a blessing. To experience their excitement as they eat something nutritious and satisfying makes me so pleased.
I am a 9th grade reading teacher, a class that most children aren't happy to be in and could care less about, and to see how students are able to really focus and participate in class once their stomachs are filled is so amazing. Satisfying our most basic need to students who otherwise would go without is what schools should be all about. Knowing that with your help I was able to feed hungry children really aids in building a better future generation.
Thank you again for your very generous donation. I greatly appreciate it. It is because of you and your donation that teens in Homestead, Florida are a little less hungry.”

Funded Dec 20, 2016I would like to take the time to express just how much your donation to my class has meant to my students and me. Many of my students don't have access to technology at home and school is the only place where they get to experience the vastness of the world of technology. These Chromebooks have been such a blessing in their lives. To see how their eyes light up when using them is such a wonderful experience. Our school district purchased an online program that is reading and math based. This program assesses each child and tailor makes their experience based upon their areas of weakness. To experience their excitement as they get better in the areas they struggle with makes me so pleased.
I am a project based teacher. I feel like projects are a great way for students to express themselves in a more creative manner. Every two months I assign a project. However all projects require research in order to learn about the person/subject matter. To see them navigate though the Internet so effortlessly is crazy. They show me, the teacher, new things that I never knew. One of the most exciting parts of this experience is that they are also learning how to type their projects and use different word processing that they couldn't do before. They also get to browse through the web learning about topics they are interested in and ask if we can do projects about those subject areas. The idea that they are so zealous about doing school work now is awe inspiring.
The world we live in is created with technology at the forefront and to see how students have warmed up to it is awesome. Some weren't interested at first but when their classmates showed them all the cool things the Chromebook does, it was like the excitement was contagious.
Thank you again for your very generous donation. I greatly appreciate it. However, my students now live for their time on the Chromebooks and if it weren't for you, they would never be granted the opportunity.”

Ms. Lee
