Accommodations Through a Laptop in an ELA Classroom!
Funded May 18, 2020Thank you so much for contributing to my project during the start of the pandemic. In my classroom every year, I always had students who needed their own laptop due to issues of motor/executive control/OT or simply at our school, we lacked working laptops for individual or pair research (keys are broken/ unresponsive, computer will not turn on even though it is charged, etc.). Through this funded project, at the very least, we will have our very own working computer specifically for the students who need an individualized laptop (as stated in their IEPs) and when the students with IEPs are not using the laptop, it can be shared among other students. The laptop can greatly assist in helping students follow along in my lessons and take notes that they can then email to themselves at home.
While right now, my students are all remote, I am excited to have the opportunity to have a class laptop to be shared with my students when we return. If students with IEPs do not need to use the laptop, it can also be used for students who want to get a head start, for example, in starting to type their essay. It can also be used as a resource for an activity in a station and ultimately, for students who may not have access at home to a laptop (our school system only provided IPads to students for remote learning), they know that they can come to my classroom after school to use the laptop to work on their assignments that need to be typed.
With so many variations and ways to use this singular laptop in the classroom to address various students and their needs, I am incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to making this project happen. I am looking forward to returning to the classroom when it is safe with my students. My students and I are eager to continue to learn and most excitedly, always, with new technology in the room. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this project happen. My students thank you. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you!!!!”

This classroom project was brought to life by FamilyAlbum and 2 other donors.Finding Identity, Navigating Society
Funded Dec 11, 2017Due to your generous donations, we were able to receive a full class copy of Someday the Pain Will be Useful to You. We engaged in a cross-comparison unit between Catcher in the Rye and Someday the Pain Will be Useful to You. Both narrators struggle with their identity. While both characters struggle with the process of becoming an adult, James (the main character from Someday the Pain Will be Useful to You) also has an additional struggle with his sexuality.
Our entire 9th grade is primarily focused on identity as it is an important part of every 9th grader's life in beginning to discover who they are, who they might be, and who they want to become. By discussing topics ranging from what it means to be an adult and an adolescent to what impacts societal's view on one's identity, and even more so in marginalized communities, students were able to engage in a rich unit as active participants with today's world's and issues.
Finally, the author was able to come and speak to students about his book. We were able to discover interesting insight regarding his choices he made with his character and what personal experiences were drawn to develop the book. Each student who attended was also able to get a book signed by the author himself! Hopefully this experience has instilled some wonderful aspirations in writing as students as they were able to speak and talk to the author.
None of this could have happened without your generous support and donations to making the classroom an even richer experience this year for students. I thank you sincerely again.”

Ms. Liu
