My students attend school in a high poverty community on the west side of Detroit. The school's population of 500 students is 100% free lunch,Title 1 and 31 A classification meeting federal guidelines. The neighborhood the students travel to and from school contain numerous burned out homes and urban blight. It is safer for my students to work on technology keyboarding skills inside the confines of the school building. The majority of my student's live in single parent households with older siblings that have not been positive role models to follow. The students find it very hard to trust adult words based on the many disappointments they have faced in their short lives. We, the educational community are the fortress built to protect the gifts and talents our students have yet to discover for themselves.
