I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what's really important: my students. Student motivation, achievement and higher engagement are what I strive for daily. My current classroom environment with six tables and 28 mix match chairs must adapt to meet the needs of my students. Outside the windows of my classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can I expect my students to solve problems and make choices if I do it for them? My classroom environment should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting at tables in wobbly, cracked chairs.
Flexible seating gives students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them and best suites their body; while helping them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Flexible seating allows students to physically become comfortable while they are learning. Some benefits of flexible seating include eliminating excess energy, increased motivation and engagement, creating better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior.
Stools, laptop desk, seat cushions, and ball chairs will provide my students the opportunity to learn in a comfortable collaborative, relaxing environment in seating that better suites their learning needs and learning styles. Evolving the classroom space to meet students’ individual needs will impact how they learn, how they interact, and the entire classroom experience. When a learning space evolves, students' work improves immensely, their grades improve, and the conversations they have with each other become invigorating.
