  • No Book Bans In Here

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

I hope this correspondence finds you well. Your kind donations have provided my scholars with much more than textbooks. They have provided an experience. The scholars have been able to make learning about the United States from a different perspective. They were provided with the knowledge to explain some of their experiences in the world and were introduced to events and historical figures they would not have otherwise been. It has provided students with a learning experience like no other. They can communicate in-depth about the world around them and better understand their experience. Most of all, they are not afraid to talk about their experience and offer critique to that of others.

Thank you for your kind donation to the scholars and their lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rodriguez

  • Interesting Reads

    Funded Feb 28, 2022

I hope this correspondence finds you well. The donations on your behalf have given the students a different perspective on reading. Your contributions have brought a culturally relevant text into our classroom in an engaging text. This has supported student learning and piqued their interest in social studies. They regularly ask me to find books like the one provided by your contribution. I appreciate your assistance in our classroom because it makes it much easier for me to teach when my students enjoy the texts we read. So, on behalf of the students and myself, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rodriguez

  • Leading Lady for Literacy

    Funded Dec 25, 2021

When the students saw that we were reading the book Shuri: a Black Panther Novel, they were excited! They instantly began talking about how the characters in the story connected to the Marvel movie Black Panther. The boys and girls were engaged throughout. The girls were excited to see a heroine and author of color. I connected them with the author Nic Stone through youtube videos and showed them our pictures together from my visit to the Ron Clark Academy. Integrating a culturally relevant book supported their learning my students did not expect in many ways. We could imagine and visually see some of the settings and events in the book through clips from the Marvel movie Black Panther and Marvel Avengers.

This was an extraordinary project, and I am, no, we as a class are glad to have your support. Thank you for the experience you have provided us!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rodriguez

  • We Need More Room

    Funded Jun 25, 2019

Your generous resources are being enjoyed by the students on a weekly basis. They now have enough room to spread out safely. They practice the exercises without bumping into their neighbors. The resources are providing the room we need to give our students in the program a safe environment.

When the students first saw the materials I was moving the large boxes into the building with a hand truck. They all wondered what was in the boxes as I took them down the halls. The students from last year when we began this campaign gasped. They knew our brand new mats had arrived and began telling their friends in line that they were for Jiu-Jitsu club.

It has inspired some of the other stuff to start some programs of their own. It has given use the room to expand and reach more students in the coming months. Most of all it has given the school hope. Hope that the generosity of others will positively impact our students and alter their futures in a positive way.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rodriguez

"Teacher, I keep bumping into them!" is continually what I hear on the mats. Two years ago I would have never thought this would be possible. I was just an optimistic first year teacher trying to share what I love with my students after-school through Jiu Jitsu. I crowd sourced $1,500 to purchase a 20 x 20 foot wrestling mat with some networking and a lot of luck, SHOUT OUT Want VS Need HBA for their generous donations! My first year, we had second and third grades 20 of them so there was plenty of room. Well, this year our second the kids grew taller, and we expanded a bit. On a good day there is a minimum of 25 students, from second, third, fourth, and fifth grade attending the program. They receive a free dinner and get to learn the "Gentle Art" with me a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue belt and fifth grade teacher Mr. Rodriguez free of any cost. This is where you come in, we have outgrown our mats and are in need of some support to purchase some more. I could preach to you about demographics, how my students are low income, how they are at risk, they need something positive to do when school gets out, and they need this. But I'm not, because the truth of the matter is I just want to share something I love with my students. Something that has changed my life and I am hoping will change theirs as well. Because I am in the business of changing lives and with a financial contribution or social media share you can too! https://www.keizertimes.com/posts/82/teacher-turns-passion-into-after-school-club
