Funded Dec 3, 2024Thank you for helping my scholars have a nice and organized big book area. This small item will make a huge difference in how they are interacting with the big books. I can’t wait to see them actually use it.
We truly appreciate your kindness and investment in their education.”

This classroom project was brought to life by An Anonymous Supporter and one other donor.Learning and Having Fun at Port Discovery Children's Museum
Funded Jan 11, 2016Dear Donors:
I just want to start off by saying thank you for investing in 92, three & four year olds. You have given them an experience they will never forget. I will always remember their smiles, their laughter, their questions and just being carefree.
We have been preparing scholars for this trip for about a month. It was an icon on our calendar. We counted how many days until we would visit Port Discovery everyday. We explored Port Discovery's website and Googled pictures so scholars would have an idea of where they were headed. Scholars thought of questions and teachers wrote down every question so they could answer them while at Port Discovery.
Then, the day arrived! Scholars walked into the classrooms and were ready to go!
Once we arrived to Port Discovery, scholars were in awe because pictures did not do this place justice. There was a three story jangled rope gym in front of them. I can honestly say, I "lost" my students for about 10 minutes *smiles*. They were exploring the gym: climbing, sliding, crossing bridges, laughing, and screaming.
Afterwards, scholars visited many different exhibits in Port Discovery. Scholars experimented with musical instruments made out of everyday materials. Created a hand drum in the arts and craft section. Tried their hand at sports: soccer, tennis, basketball, and baseball. Some students explored the "gas station" and pumped gas, filled tires with air, and purchased from convenient store.
However, the highlight was the child size diner. The kitchen in the diner called everyones name. Scholars immediately ran, put on aprons, and started cooking. Scholars had real pots and pans, menus, money and pads. The stove lit up, the sink was huge, the refrigerator looked real, and the juke box allowed students to pick music. We spent majority of our time in this exhibit. I enjoyed watching scholars use the skills they learned in the classroom and display them while they were playing.
Once we were back at school, scholars had the opportunity to talk about their experience at Port Discovery. Those interested also had a chance to draw their favorite part of Port Discovery.
Again, thank you for helping my scholars get a chance to experience Port Discovery.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Penny
