  • Readers Are Leaders

    Funded Sep 3, 2016

I just want to say thank you so much for your donations. The bookshelf has been a major asset to our classroom. Each month we have an author of the month and I put the books for that author on display on our bookshelf. I also have different seasonal books on the bookshelf as well. The students ask all of the time if they can read the books that are on the bookshelf when they finish their work early or even when we have our brain break times. It is so easy for them to see the books and they make connections during our lessons with those stories. Also, the new story books have been a huge hit too. The classic stories like "Little Red Hen" is still a favorite in first grade classes today. Also, the pillows that your donations helped to buy are fought over daily. They can't wait to go read to a partner and pick a pillow to sit on. They now sit all over the classroom and can use the space we have because of the pillows. The listening center is also a big hit, and is so easy to keep organized because of our new CD player holder. Your donations have made such a huge impact on my students. I could never thank you enough.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Easley

  • Read-Alouds

    Funded Jan 20, 2016

First of all thank you so much for your donation to our classroom. I cannot even begin to tell you how grateful I am. The listening center has now become a classroom favorite. I have one student in particular that would pick to go to the listening center everyday multiple times if he could. They not only want to listen to those books, but many times during reading time they want to read those books on their own. They also have been the main requested books for me to read during storytime, so as you can tell they are really enjoying the books. We took a vote and by far the favorite book was Rumpelstiltskin. Many students had never heard of Henny Penny, so they also have really enjoyed reading that book as well. My ESL students also choose the listening the most, and I really think that hearing the book and seeing the words that are being read has helped with their vocabulary and fluency in reading. Once again, I just want to say thank you so much for your donation. My students love them!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Easley

I have a classroom full of 22 eager to learn first graders, and they are the most amazing group of kids. They come to school excited about the day and ready to work hard and learn a lot. They have a variety of different interests and all love story time. The first thing they do when they come to class is look at the story books I have set out to read for that day. They love books and the classroom library! My classroom is also full of students whose families speak only Spanish at home. That is why hearing stories read-aloud helps my students so much. It helps build fluency in young readers, especially ESL. My school is a high poverty school in Memphis, TN. Our school is also a very large school, and even though it is large the students still feel that it is their home and they are welcomed there. We want it to be a high learning environment and want these students to have every opportunity available to them.
