Trauma and Stress are REAL to students. Trauma can get in the way of educational progress. When trauma disrupts students learning they have a hard time refocusing and learning academic skills. The students at our school act out when stressed out. This acting out gets them suspended from school. The more we can support them with strategies to calm down the more academic learning will occur. The brain shuts down when trauma happens. Behaviors such as slamming doors, yelling, running down the hall, destruction, of property , and cursing materialize. Some of our students when traumatized need a place where they will feel safe and can relax. They need a place to regain composure, so they can refocus and return to an academic environment. I am asking for tools that will help children learn to manage their emotions. Getting under a heavy blanket or sitting in something that is snug can help them to regain there composure and bring about an academic mind frame. With the help of the blankets, chairs or hand trinkets learning can happen at a more rapid pace. This allows the child to grow in many different ways.
