  • Robust Readers in 4th Grade!

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

First off, I want to thank you for your support of my classroom projects. It is because of your donation that our classroom library is a the most popular spot these days!

The students are loving the new series books and creating their own little book clubs! It is so wonderful to see kids trading their thoughts on characters and sharing recommendations for their next read! The picture books have been used as read alouds and allow for such rich discussion across a variety of topics. I find that so much social emotional learning happens around the plots of these magical books!

I sincerely want to thank you for giving me the resources to provide a richer literary life for my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dwyer

  • Freshening Up and Staying Organized!

    Funded Sep 7, 2024

First off, I want to thank you for your support of my classroom projects. It is because of your donation that our classroom feels even more organized and energized!

I wish I could bottle up the look on the students faces when the air fresheners activate and create a a beautiful scent in the room. The room is a quieter and more focused space thanks to the sound dampening tennis balls on the chairs. We have been using the portable speaker to practice math fluency facts and the label maker has made charging and retrieving our devices a breeze!

So much of the success of a classroom depends on preparation and environment. Thank you for giving me the tools to prepare and organize my classroom for success!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dwyer

  • Effective Math Talks Every Day!

    Funded Sep 11, 2023

I have read that research shows that when students talk more about their math thinking, they are more motivated to learn and they learn more. Talking about math thinking can also serves as a great form of assessment, giving me insight into what students have mastered and where they still need help.

I can't thank you enough for your support of my project. Thanks to your donations I was able to purchase materials which enliven my daily math talks. The materials are editable so I can add students names and interests to our discussions as well as modify topics. The students have grown in their understanding and are eager to share their thinking.

This year my students will be taking the NYS Math exam in the spring. My hope is that our daily math talk practice will give them the confidence and knowledge to score the best they can.

Thank you again for your support of public education. Your donation makes a difference in so many lives!”

  • Quality Reading Passages

    Funded Dec 6, 2022

Thank you again for your generous donations to my classroom. My students and I now have access to age appropriate and engaging texts.

By using my Teachers Pay Teachers gift card, I am able to search for specific texts that are connected to my curriculum and allow my students to have these texts at their disposal. In the past, I would have to create my own texts or project a copy of a specific text onto the Smartboard. Using these resources, students have their own copies of stories and we can really focus in on highlighting and marking up the text.

Students are growing as readers which in turn grows their confidence...thanks to you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dwyer

  • Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Doors!

    Funded May 26, 2022

Thank you again for supporting my classroom. These books are incredible. I have used these books in so many ways already and the children are eating them up. So far my students have chosen these books as read alouds and as a fun way to warm up their brains by taking a picture walk. Picture books like the ones I chose are so rich in illustrations that we can spend entire lessons using just the pictures to tell the story. Later on we will connect the illustrations with the text on the page to tell the whole story! Many of the books I chose are also specifically geared towards making language acquisition fun---something every teacher strives to do! I have been able to teach spelling principles with the book "Look!" and "Take Away the A." These playful and creative stories help make my spelling and grammar lessons really stick.

These books help me to prioritize diversity, promote empathy, honor many cultures, and develop early literacy and storytelling skills. Again, I can't thank you enough for supporting my classroom and allowing me to bring smiles to my students faces through literacy!”

  • Fresh Center Activities

    Funded Mar 19, 2022

Thank you for your support yet again! This Donors Choose support network is incredible. These activities exposed my students to materials some have never seen or used before. First off, the kinetic sand is a huge hit. We've made an ice cream shop, a construction site, worked with mixing colors, and shared materials all using this one resource. The added bonus is the sensory input and muscle building manipulation built right in!

Secondly, we have all fallen in love with the Clumsy Thief games. This is a fast paced game and the best part is the constant practice with combinations to 10 and 20. Since playing, we hear students referring to the game while problem solving---who could ask for more!!

I believe that learning should be fun and these materials are making that a reality! Thank you for donating!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dwyer

  • Sensory Regulation Rules!

    Funded May 7, 2022

I received these sensory materials about 2 weeks ago and all I can say is WOW! The immediate impact these tools have had in my classroom is incredible.

These adaptive seats have given even the most fidgety students a better sense of their personal space which in turn has increased their focus. They can gently rock during a lesson and the sturdy plastic gives them great back support. The students lovingly refer to them as their "eggs."

Additionally, the glitter/color tubes have really helped one girl in particular. She becomes overwhelmed when she makes a mistake on her classwork which can derail her for the rest of the day. A few days ago I saw her anxiety building up and before it escalated, I put one of the color tubes in front of her. After a minute or two, she was much more calm and at ease thanks to these mesmerizing visual supports.

Thank you again for caring enough about education to support my classroom. It means so much!”

  • Beautiful Butterflies in the East Village

    Funded Mar 10, 2022

I wanted to say thank you again for contributing to this project. These caterpillars turned butterflies brought so much joy, excitement, and interest to my classroom. My students couldn't believe that we were responsible for these adorable fuzzy creatures!

After placing them in smaller cups, we were SHOCKED by just how quickly they grew in just a day or two! We observed them everyday and kept journals to document our findings. The science of the life cycle was unfolded before our eyes! When the caterpillars became butterflies, we would sit in a circle on the rug and have breakfast or snack and just watch them. They were so soothing that passerby in the hallway would inevitably pop in to check on them!

I hope to do this every year with my students---it was a real joy to experience!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dwyer

These materials will provide my students with the opportunity to engage in STEM activities on a daily basis. In our current educational climate there is so much emphasis on preparing our students for a future full of new forms of engineering and technology. These new tools will be used daily as early finisher work, "challenge yourself" stations, exciting center work, and to further incorporate the sciences into a math and ELA heavy day. My goal is to encourage our budding scientists, artists, designers, technicians, and architects! These STEM bins and manipulatives will allow my students to practice their critical thinking and fine motor skills in collaborative and independent ways. These tools will also act as a motivator in the classroom and motivation is key to remaining engaged at any academic level.
