The students I have the honor of teaching here in Nevada are of low-income households and 99% English Language Learners. These students are eager to learn and the most respectful children I ever encountered. Because of their financial situations, many of them have not had rich experiences, especially when it comes to literature. I want to show these children how wonderful reading can be. This past year, I had a group of students who entered fourth grade unmotivated and uninterested in their education. By the end of the year, the progress, not only in terms of data, but in work ethic and interest in learning made me so proud. I can only imagine the progress my next group will achieve once they have the experience the world of classic literature and more rigorous text.
