Many of my students have cheap dollar store calculators, and some none at all. In a class of 30 students, typically only 1-3 have a graphing calculator. Graphing calculators are an enormous advantage in upper level math classes, standardized testing, mathematical ability, and academic achievement. I'm requesting fifteen Texas Instruments TI-84 PLUS CE Graphing Calculators for my classroom. Studies have shown that students who have graphing calculators have improved conceptual, problem solving, and operational math skills; better attitudes toward math; increased metacognitive awareness; and better ACT and SAT scores, which opens doors to college. These benefits persist even when they aren't using their calculators. In my class, I ask my students to graph polynomial functions, find intersections of multiple functions, solve systems of equations, make calculations using logarithms, solve trigonometric functions, and many other skills that are greatly facilitated by a graphing calculator. Having this tool will open new doors to learning for my students.
