My students love to cook! Each week we cook together in class, using student friendly recipes. This enables them to learn many important skills involved in preparing simple meals for themselves and others to enjoy, including nutrition and the importance of a balanced diet. Students have the opportunity to try new foods. They must determine whether recipes are healthy or unhealthy and suggest appropriate substitutions for ingredients they may not like or have allergies to. Through these activities, they're developing knowledge and skills that will serve them in their daily lives, allowing them to take care of themselves more independently and safely provide for their own needs.
Students are learning basic meal prep, cooking skills, kitchen safety, nutrition, and healthy eating habits.
Most of what we have is either borrowed, worn, old, or no longer in good working order. We are in need of fresh new kitchenware-- a hot plate, pots, pans, crock pot, electric skillet, and microwave for cooking the food, utensils, measuring cups, spoons, mixer, plates, bowls, colander, knives, and cutting boards for preparing the food, a mini fridge, storage containers, and ice cube trays for proper food storage and easy classroom access, a dish drying rack for clean up, and finally power strips to provide electricity ensuring a safe cooking environment, while using multiple appliances. Using cookware, appliances, and kitchen utensils, students will be able to practice proper food prep, storage, cooking, clean up, and safety skills in an real-life situation as our classroom becomes a kitchen, cooking up delicious meals and the skills for success!
