I can not express enough how thankful my students and I are for your support of our grant. This grant provided students with memories from our first year in the Virtual classroom.

  • Let's See and Hear the Lessons

    Funded Aug 25, 2020

This grant has provided me with materials I use daily in teaching Virtually. Since Covid 19 quarantine started I have been teaching online daily lessons to 24 students. This grant has provided me with materials to use like Math Manipulatives to show my student the actual materials we would use in the classroom. I can easily show my student magnetic base ten blocks to explain place value. In language arts I use the word building block letter blocks to demonstrate spelling words, making words, and phonics rules. I use the smaller magnetic letters to show word building in a more concrete way. Both of these material stay by my side because they are used daily. The microphone is also invaluable with helping my student to hear me online in a Google Classroom meet.

Thank you so much for supporting me and my students. Your support has made a big difference for me and the kids.”

  • Teaching Online With Interactive Google Meet!

    Funded May 7, 2020

I have truly loved the items from this grant! Last spring when I received this grant I used it with my students during the Covid19 outbreak. I wanted you to know that this year I am still teaching first grade virtually. I use the items from this grant daily. I could not be seen on screen without my light with the umbrella. It is amazing and makes a big difference in my lessons. The stand to hold my iPad is always up holding the iPad to see my students while I teach on Google Meets.

The resources are being used to help guide my instructions for reading, comprehension, and writing. The lessons are great. I have used the reading books to share with my current group of kids and they love the series of Ivy & Bean and Jigsaw Jones mystery books.

I appreciate you support and want you to know I am still using all the resources this year. Thank you for the great support. With you help you have promoted learning for 45 students.”

  • Literacy & Math Exploration With Sphero Bolt Robots

    Funded Oct 12, 2019

This grant has given my students two Sphero Bolt Robots. We use robots to learn how to program, how to think logically and sequentially. Students have learned how to program the robots to go forward searching for answers to the problem. We can think as a group and work cooperatively together to solve problems.

In the academic world, students have used the robots to navigate through a community while they learn about community leaders. Students made a part of the community with the help of their parents. We put the community together and worked with another class. Students had to program the robot to travel down the road to their building. When they arrived, students would tell about the building they choose for the community. We also use the robot in math to learn our math facts by answering a problem and programming Sphero Bolt to the correct answer. In writing we have used the robots to choose what we are going to add to our writing piece. Sometimes the pieces do not fit perfectly, but we have fun writing a story with set parameters.

The last benefit of the robots is the students love learning while using the technology. Students want to come to school and practice their skills with the robots. They want to learn in my class. It is amazing how much fun the robots are to program. Thank you for giving to this grant and allowing my students to grow and learn with Sphero Bolt.”

  • Sitting Safely In Small Group

    Funded Aug 28, 2019

This project was written to provide my students with comfortable seats that are safe to sit in that will last for years. The grant provided six stools on wheels that will not fall over. The purpose is to use these chairs daily in small guided reading groups at a table with the teacher. The chairs are comfortable and turn around to all students the freedom to move around as needed. The chairs are also used by students during independent time to work with a friend to buddy read.

When the chairs were unpacked, the students helped put them together. We were all very excited and wanted to try them out. I told the children these were special chairs. These chairs would make them smart readers and when they sit in these chairs the world would be an open book just waiting for them to explore. Every child uses these stools every day during guided reading. We all sit tall and and safe in these stools provided from this grant.

Students use the chairs during self exploration. We use the chairs to safely go on Virtual field trips via Google expeditions and Oculus glasses. The stools allow students to turn around and view different places in 360 degree view without fear of falling into something or bumping into a table. The stools are a great addition to my classroom and the students and I are proud to sit and read a book in the new stools. We will continue to use the stool on a daily basis and we love to share them with visitors in our class. Thank you for your support of this project. It is a great project and we love our new stools.”

  • Virtually Tripping Through the World

    Funded Apr 10, 2019

I teach in a rural school in South Carolina. My students do not have the opportunity to travel a lot or to get out of our little town and see other parts of the world. This DonorsChoose grant allows my students to virtually travel anywhere in the world. We have already traveled to the ocean to see how trash can affect the sea animals. We have traveled to Africa to view animals in the wild. Students are engaged and thrilled to use the glasses.

My students have written Opinion writing about using straws and how it affects the turtles after watching a video using the new Oculus glasses. The glasses are very important to the kids, we love using them. Thank you for letting us have the opportunity to see the world through the Oculus Glass in Virtual Reality.”

  • Select a Seat for Success

    Funded Apr 16, 2019

The current school trend in education is for classrooms to be student centered and a place where students can create and decorate the room. Part of this trend is to have alternative seating. Students learn with seating arrangement that are diverse. My DonorsChoose Grant requested five portable Lap Desk/Laptop Stand/Writing chairs for my students. These laptop chairs are used daily for students to work on iPads, laptops, reading, and writing.

Students love the new chairs. The chairs are very popular in my room. I had to create a seating chart so students had a chance to use the chairs. Everyone wants one. I will have to get more next year. The children love to sit in the chair and collaborate with a friend, read a book, or work on an iPad.

I want to thank PNC for giving me the gift to allow me to get these tables. They are great and we love using them inside and outside of our classroom.”

Have you ever stood in front of a class and had to give an oral report? Well my class has a new way of reporting what they have learned by using iPads. We can make movies, make our art work come to life, and record ourselves reading books. My students live in a rural part of South Carolina and they are taught to make the most of their education. This grant will provide my class with headphone so they can listen to books online and can record themselves reporting on information they have learned. I teach 20 first grade students in a rural school. I want the students to think outside the norm and to look for new ways to express themselves. We are planning on using lots of programs to share our learning with our friends and families.
