  • Deaf Students Need Books by Deaf Authors!

    Funded May 12, 2022

For Deaf students, any chance they get to find heroes and role models within their own community - the Deaf Community - can be life-changing. Seeing that "Deaf people can do anything hearing people can do, except hear," as quoted by the first Deaf President of Gallaudet University - I. King Jordan, really does make a difference for our students.

Deaf people can be authors, too! This is what my students understand when they pick up a best-seller that has been written by a Deaf author. The impact this can have on a child cannot be understated.

I am so happy that this project was able to bring more works by Deaf authors into our school library at the Delaware School for the Deaf. This is making a difference for my students, and I couldn't have done it without your generous support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Karen

  • Diverse Books for Deaf Students

    Funded May 12, 2022

The books purchased with your donations to this project have brought much-needed diversity to our school library selections. My goal as a school librarian is to have a collection that provides "mirrors, windows, and doors" for my students. Books in which they can see themselves, have a peek into others' lives, and maybe even develop true empathy by taking a walk in the shoes of another through the power of reading.

Now we have more books that do all of that for all of my students. Students who are female, students of color, students who identify as LGBTQ+, and more now have more to choose from when they are looking to borrow interesting books from their school library.

Seeing their faces light up when they find a book that sparks their interest is the most rewarding thing of all as a school librarian. You have helped me see that more often by helping to fund this project.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Karen

  • Adapted Books for Exceptional Learners

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

The books we were able to add to our school library with this project have been received by students with great enthusiasm! Our Exceptional Learners have more choices for borrowing books that fit their needs.

This brings the library to life for these students, and makes the library more inclusive of all our learners at DE School for the Deaf. Watching our students with multiple challenges be able to find a book they find interesting and engaging to borrow during Library Special is so exciting!

The adapted books we obtained through donors' generosity are going a long way toward getting ALL of our students hooked on reading!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Karen

The school library at the Delaware School for the Deaf is a very active place! We are a school that serves Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind students from 18mos-21years and we have all grades (PreK-12). As the school library/media specialist and literacy specialist, I am constantly trying to keep our library collection updated, relevant, and engaging for my students. Fostering lifelong readers is my goal. Reading opens the door to a wide, wide world. Literacy is the key to many successes. Nothing is more important than making sure our Deaf bilingual students are literate and successful and live happy, fulfilled lives full of purpose and meaning. In the 21st century, multiple literacies are required, so the school library is not only about books and print, but also about digital literacies, evaluating information and its sources, and being critical and creative thinkers. I strive to provide it all!
