Our school is the first one to be built in the neighborhood in over 30 years. It serves a largely Latino population. Research shows that Latinos are still underrepresented in post-secondary institutions. The mission of our school is to prepare students for college. One of the ways that we hope to do that is by offering Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
I currently teach AP Spanish Language to a mixed group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. While most of these students grew up in a Spanish-speaking household, many still have difficulty with the reading and writing. Spanish may be their fist language, but it was never formally taught to them in the classroom.
