    Funded Mar 5, 2025

Thank you so much for your generous donation and support for my students! Your help ensures they have access to essential products, allowing them to feel confident and focused on their learning. Your generosity not only meets a basic need but also promotes equity and dignity in our school community. We truly appreciate your support!”

  • Nurturing Stars of Spanish: Empowering Growth with Games and Affirmations

    Funded Aug 17, 2024

I cannot thank you enough for your incredible support of "Nurturing Stars of Spanish: Empowering Growth with Games and Affirmations." Your generosity has brought so much joy and inspiration to my classroom, and my students, whom I affectionately call Estrellas del Español, are already thriving with these new resources.

The moment my students saw the interactive games and affirmation cards, their faces lit up with excitement! We immediately incorporated them into our daily routine—using the games to reinforce vocabulary and grammar through play, making learning more engaging and collaborative. The affirmation cards have been just as impactful, creating a positive and encouraging atmosphere. Each day, students select an affirmation, reading it aloud to start class on a strong, confident note. These small moments are making a big difference in their self-esteem and motivation.

Because of your generosity, my students are not only improving their Spanish skills but also developing resilience and teamwork. Moving forward, we will continue using these tools to strengthen their language proficiency while fostering a growth mindset. Thank you for believing in my students and helping them shine both academically and emotionally. Your kindness has made a lasting impact!”

  • Publish Poetry, Please

    Funded Dec 28, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation to Please Publish Poetry. The AP Spanish Language students will be very excited to see their own poetry and short stories "published". We will be writing a poem in the style of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda Ode to an Onion and a short story modeled after Isabel Allende's "Cartas de amor traicionado" ("Letters of Betrayed Love").

Thank you once more on behalf of the AP Spanish Language students.”

  • Spanish Classroom Library

    Funded Dec 5, 2009

As the AP Spanish Language teacher, I wanted to thank you on behalf of the students at the e school. Your donation for our Spanish library has been extremely helpful.

Students in AP Spanish Language took the Advanced Placement exam in May, and our students greatly need the extra practice reading. I have been in communication with the English teacher as well, and I know that he is also having students read for class in his class.

Again, thank you for your generous donation. Our students not only benefited in preparation for the AP exam, but for their own personal enjoyment as well.

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Ochoa-Rivera

  • Journals - "Freedom Writers" Style

    Funded Feb 14, 2008

Wow!!! What a great surprise to find a donor for our proposal. Thank you so much for finding it in your heart to donate to our Spanish class. As the year ends, students tend to run out of supplies, such as notebooks. Now, they will have a place to write down their thoughts, notes, and assignments. Thank you once again for your generous donation”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Ochoa-Rivera

  • Spanish Magazines in the Classroom

    Funded Jan 19, 2008

Muchas gracias! Thank you very much for your generous donation. The students at our school will now be able to enjoy Spanish magazines while practicing their reading skills and learning about the Hispanic culture. On behalf of the students enrolled in Spanish 3 and Advanced Placement Spanish Language, we look forward to receiving our first subscription and sending you short summaries of our reading! Thank you once more”

  • Comfortable Reading Space

    Funded Apr 11, 2007

So far, my freshmen advisory class has read "Holes", "Breathing Underwater", and "I am the Cheese". My sophomore/junior/senior Advanced Placement Spanish Language class has read everything from newspaper articles to poems to short stories by authors from Chile, Mexico, Spain, and Colombia. With your generous donation, my students will be able to sit comfortably in the beanbags and associate reading with leisure. Thank you for your time and generosity. My students are so excited to hear that they will soon have a comfortable space to read, as opposed to sitting on the floor”

  • Spanish Dictionaries, Por Favor

    Funded Mar 17, 2007

Thank you so much for your generous donation. We will be utilizing the Spanish dictionaries in the next couple of weeks to come as we prepare for the Advanced Placement Spanish Language & Spanish Literature exams in May. My students often ask me for the meaning, translation, and/or synonym for a word, and I always refer them to the few resources in the room: their friends, the small glossary in their text, and the few dictionaries that we do have in the room. Now they can improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills by having an extensive vocabulary. Thank you once again on behalf of the students at Oscar de la Hoya Animo Charter High School”

  • Trip to Spain

    Funded Mar 2, 2007

WOW!!! Thank you so much for this great opportunity to expose one of my AP Spanish Language students to the real experience and culture of Spain. I jumped for joy when I received the news that this trip had been funded. Our student population comes from a low-income community, so few get this chance to visit a whole different country. Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Ochoa-Rivera

Our school is the first one to be built in the neighborhood in over 30 years. It serves a largely Latino population. Research shows that Latinos are still underrepresented in post-secondary institutions. The mission of our school is to prepare students for college. One of the ways that we hope to do that is by offering Advanced Placement (AP) courses. I currently teach AP Spanish Language to a mixed group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. While most of these students grew up in a Spanish-speaking household, many still have difficulty with the reading and writing. Spanish may be their fist language, but it was never formally taught to them in the classroom.
