Books Shelves Filled for Black History Month Should Extend Beyond!
Funded Jun 5, 2023On behalf of the fabulous Falcons, we would like to thank you. Our informational libraries do not have the diversity we want to read. It is an exciting time in our reading centers, as we share information, stories and engage in literary talk. We are required to read so many books each year, and now we have materials for students of all colors, sizes and places.
As we move closer to Black History Month, we are eager to be able to pick up a book and read and decide who we want to research further, what books make us want to learn and understanding that reading is so very important, but definitely fun when you have things to read.
Students say to me, "What a blast it is to know, I am special in the skin I am in and read authors books that look like me and can relate to how I feel." This makes our classroom rich in print, colorful in view and energized by materials donated to our classroom. We are forever grateful as Fabulous Falcons!”

Funded Oct 14, 2022On behalf of the 7th Grade Tigers, a huge ROAR is in store for those supporters and donors who helped provide educational reading materials to the students. The new reading materials are not too lengthy and student interest is high while kids explore learning of all genre, learn fine print, titles, subtitles and supports the STEM initiative in the ELA class.
Reading in theclassroom involves independent, round robin, popcorn activities and where students can practice small group strategies to improve comprehension skills. As an additional assignment, students are required to construct objective summaries using the text to practice citing, annotating and developing constructive responses in preparation for Standardized Test coming in May 2023.
As a team, students have earned recognition for the Race2Read competition with the largest points in middle school in Atlanta Public. Students don't mind learning, if its worth it to them that day. We have to make it fun for them, and this grant did!”

Funded Jan 22, 2021On behalf of the scholars, we would like to thank the donors of our project after experiencing the effects of COVID. Days of school face to face were missed but the generous contributions that were made allowed our teacher to use an up to date piece of technology, the cleaning supplies helped to sanitize as we returned to face to face school, and the easel/teaching stand allowed students to come to the front to demonstrate mastery of skills through modeling and providing evidence of the work done.
Students were very excited to know that sponsors took an interest in their needs and teacher's request for supplies. The demographics reflect who we are based on a zip code, but the reality is the students lack resource that help them improve and succeed regardless of a pandemic or not.”

Funded Aug 22, 2017The impact the "Technology-Based Flipped Learning in ELA" project has made is very inspirational and has an educational value on the lives of scholars and future leaders who have been identified as at risk.
Fortunately, with the opportunity to use the LCD technology projector awarded for scholars to use as a resource during their presentations of informational text, allows them to demonstrate an understanding of the Georgia ELA Standards during a study of Georgia Living Unit along with teaching about famous Georgians who have made an impact while working in small-groups developing projects to present to their peers.
The most exciting use of an LCD projector in a future certified STEM school is the hands-on real-time experience to create, research, and present Georgian history with visuals, PowerPoint, videos and more using an LCD to gain real life and valuable knowledge to be remembered forever.
The group of scholars that seemed the most interested was students with lower Lexile levels (3rd-6th grade) in an 8th grade class that have difficulty in grasping concepts in a written text, but the LCD technology supports their academic needs and trains them to be on the cutting edge of technology using differentiated learning to meet them where they are in a competitive world of education.”

Students Dream to Read
Funded Oct 13, 2016As recipients of the "Dream to Read" donors choose funded project, the students were so excited about having consistent use of their own classroom set of Sony headphones. The students have been able to use the headphones to read a variety of genre allowing them an opportunity to escape into their own world of reading, which has demonstrated a successful strategy, increasing their Lexie scores (reading levels) and improving reading comprehension skills.
Students in the ELA classroom were reading "Secret Life of Bees" online which allowed them an opportunity to read the novel and listen online to increase their interest level, and identify specific styles of writing that were used which correlate with the state standards in preparation for the standardized test in April 2017.
Each student has the opportunity to use technology along with the paper, pencil, highlighter supplies to create artifacts which demonstrate and allow for differentiated instruction using hands-on activities, creativity, and reflection through writing.”

Scholars Striving for Success with Resources
Funded Dec 29, 2015The impact the Scholars Striving for Success project made a strong impact in the lives of scholars who have been identified as at risk. However, with the opportunity to use the technology awarded scholars were able to use resources during their research and exploration for Black History Month, during a novel study of Anne Frank & the effects of the Holocaust on a nation in history and technology resources with a rolling cart for small-group standardized test review.
The most exciting use of technology was the hands on real time experience to listen and read history beyond the assigned project and gain valuable knowledge to be remembered forever.
The group of scholars that seemed the most interested in the project using the technology, supplies, and rolling cart were the low lexile level readers. These students demonstrated proficiency in creating their own bulletin boards, completing research projects and assembling their own gifts with a sense of pride, accomplishment and hope.”

Dolphins Diving Into A World Of Exploration
Funded Oct 15, 2015The students and I are extremely excited and grateful to have received a fully funded donation for the Donor's Choose project submitted. As a part of our district-wide initiative to increase the lexile reading levels of at-risk students, the donated technology resources have provided for struggling students the opportunity to explore the world around them, bring knowledge to the classrooms and support efforts to increase their reading levels using up to date technology. As students are exposed to various resources donated to them through the Donors Choose project, others have commented on how impressed they are with the improved reading scores, social skills and well constructed oral and written responses. Technology has become such an important part of our educational system today, and for that reason, students now are able to use various technology apparatus daily in the classroom to explore places and different reading genre they may have not otherwise learned if not for the generous donations.
Due to the complete funding of the project, students are able to use the Kindle Fires and Boogie Boards to complete practice grammar exercise reviews, complete on-line quizzes and/or read a variety of genre-related material which is specific to topics discussed either in class or explore other informational sites to further enhance and improve upon their current academic levels of knowledge. After receiving recognition personally, my eagerness and passion to share with students an opportunity to use, read and discuss the donated items purchased for their team became ta driving force for me personally as a life-long learner and facilitator serving as the guide on the side, watching students take control of their future one day, one class at a time. The students who take full advantage of the donated technology resources will serve as models for others with their project donations, and demonstrate how extremely excited they are to know that there are people out there in society, who cares enough to make a donation that primarily may have a positive effect on their future endeavors. My students work together using the resources as support for their learning and share information learned after using the technology resources donated. The Kindle Fires are equipped with the most recent applications, which makes learning exciting for students who really enjoy the fact that the various apps teach them a variety of information.
For those students who are using the resources to accelerate their reading levels, I have noticed the search for advanced reading materials are now much easier to obtain because we have the resources. As a part of our daily practice routine, students have used the Kindles and Boogie boards during their grammar exercises and silent-sustained reading period which seems to always leave the students asking for more time using the resources. During the closing, wrap up sessions I conduct daily, I have received numerous amounts of appreciation for writing the project to help students increase their reading lexile scores, and gain a love for reading through exploration using their own funded project on Kindle Fires.
What an adventure we have been afforded as an educator and as students from the generosity and commitment you have for us!”
With gratitude,
Dr. Nicole Brodie
