Be Clean, Be Green, Be a Recycling Machine!
Funded Nov 29, 2022This was such an amazing project!! Over 100 students have been trained as building recycle leaders and these students will train the other 400 children in our building to help out next year. In our first two weeks of recycling, we filled two entire dumpsters outside because we now have a system in place to recycle weekly. We are recycling once a week on Fridays but in May we will recycle TWICE weekly because this green movement has been so successful in our school. Parents have commented how happy they are that we are finally recycling and are in full support of this project.
When we first saw the materials, we made a huge tower to introduce the bins to our building! They got so excited not just to see them but to put room numbers on them and pass them out around the building. Fourth grade students made thank you cards for the donors. The same group created presentations to share with every grade level about how and what we should recycle at school. We came up with a schedule together and also created a flyer about what to recycle. They did such a great job and I'm so proud of them!
We definitely want to expand this program to our cafeteria where we throw away a lot of plastic water bottles. Our next move is to order special bins for the cafeteria so we can expand our recycling program. Next year, the students that were leaders/trainers this year will work with every other grade level to train them so that everyone from kindergarten through sixth grade gets a chance to do this amazing and fun job. Each week watching them collect the bins, dump them, and then deliver them back to the rooms, I see so much excitement and other kids are always asking when it will be their turn next. Thank you so much for this project-it is definitely making a difference in our building!”
With gratitude,
Dr. Hume
