These resources will provide the opportunity for students to create stories, letters, and other original works in their own handwriting. These works will align with new vocabulary and academic language they develop in the classroom. To capture their learning, the vocabulary imagery will be printed (using the printer ink) on cardstock, and the students will write their stories, letters, etc. with the vocabulary. These completed products will, then be bound into personal "dictionaries" for the students (using the scissors, pencils, pens, binder clips, etc.). This project allows students to learn academic language, produce and publish products in English as outlined in Nevada Academic Content Standard W.2.5: With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. According to the WIDA Consortium, learning to write English is one of the last skills that students learning a language develop, and it is critical that students practice it daily. Thus, it is important that students have the proper writing tools to apply these skills on a daily basis. The pens will do just that.
