Broadway in the Classroom II
Funded Oct 18, 2017Thank you for supporting Broadway Books First Class through your DonorsChoose donations! I am humbled by your trust and belief in this program.
The children's books are an integral part of the vision I have for Broadway Books First Class, which is to celebrate literacy and the Arts for young children in New York City. That vision has not changed since the program's inception in October 2015 with a visit from Tony Award Winner Gregory Jbara (Billy Elliott). Since then, 26 members of the Broadway theater community have read aloud from 24 children's books for students in preschool and first & second grades. This year another 12 guest artists are scheduled to visit and they will read books purchased through your kind donations.
The first of these, The Gold Leaf by Kirsten Hall, was read by Ali Stroker (Spring Awakening) in November and was followed in December with Tony Award Nominee Charles Busch (Tale of the Allergist's Wife) reading Unlovable by Dan Yacarrino.
It was heartwarming to see the children sitting together on the rug to read and talk about the stories or comment on the illustrations. It's a pleasure to give out the beautiful books this school year during each Broadway Books First Class visit. You may read more about each upcoming visit through the website broadwaybooksfirstclass.com.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose.org Community and 9 other donors.Broadway in the Classroom!
Funded Oct 4, 2017Thank you for supporting Broadway Books First Class through your DonorsChoose donations! I am humbled by your trust and belief in this program. Together we raised almost $3,000 to purchase 200 high-quality children's books in just a little over a month. That is rather impressive!

The first of these, The Gold Leaf by Kirsten Hall, was read by Ali Stroker (Spring Awakening) on November 15, 2017. Photographs of this incredible event are posted on the DonorsChoose website. We created an autumnal wonderland to mirror the theme of the book and Kirsten Hall even stopped by as a surprise guest. After the reading, Kirsten and Ali autographed the books for each child.
It was heartwarming to see the preschool and second grade children sitting together on the rug to read and talk about the story or the illustrations. I heard from one parent the next day, she shared that her son wanted her to read the book three times before he went to bed that night.
This stands as a testament to the impact of the program and highlights the importance of your gift. I am excited to give out the beautiful books this school year during each Broadway Books First Class visit. Creating Our Own Planet!
Funded Apr 12, 2012Another school year is drawing to a close and first grade will soon be a lovely memory for the wee ones entrusted to my care this year. One of those happy memories is sure to be the arrival of the "Create Your Own Planet!" books by Todd Parr. Your generosity has made a difference to a group of grateful children for whom owning this book would not otherwise have been possible.
I knew the books were a big, fat hit when the children chose to work on their "Todd Parr" books for center time every Friday, eschewing other well-liked possibilities such as blocks and the computer. And because this is a 240-page activity book it will provide hours of fun during the summer months as well.
So, thank you all for answering my plea to supply these books for my students. It would have been easy to pass it by without much thought but you took the time to smile upon us. I know that "times is tough" all around but you made things a bit more pleasant for an amazing group of children.
Have a fantastic summer! ”

Deaf First Graders Experience the Magic of "Peter Pan"
Funded Sep 26, 2005In our morning meeting today I told the students that our trip to see "Peter Pan" was fully funded by some very wonderful and generous people. They jumped up and down and actually hugged one another. They are so excited and the excitement only grew as we discussed the show and what they could expect to see. Many of them have seen the Disney movie and asked about flying. When they found out that people would actually fly onstage they just sat there with their little mouths open. I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE THEM ENJOY THIS! And it is thanks to you. We are very grateful and excited for this opportunity. Thank You”
