Keeping students interested in the school library media center is not difficult, but attracting students in the first place is a real challenge. This project will provide a dedicated space for groups to work on puzzles in the media center, attracting the students who prefer to work with their hands rather than read a book. These students need a purpose for spending time in the media center, and a puzzle station would give them a reason to visit -something to do while they are exposed to all of the books and excited readers. Using puzzles to attract students who wouldn't typically come to the media center is a great way to make connections and find the missing pieces together! A puzzle station would give my students a chance to use their visual-spatial, short term memory, and problem solving skills with the added bonus of reducing stress. Puzzles also allow a natural way for teachers to work with students informally, talking about all sorts of topics and helping students feel that the media center is the coolest place to be.
