In my classroom, Project-Based Learning engages students and gives them a chance to write authentic pieces - letters to the editor, policy briefs, and creative works, to name a few. These writing projects require some research, and although we have library resources and some Chromebooks shared with the entire department, it can be difficult to schedule access to those resources as they are in high demand. Even when we schedule a couple of days with the Chromebook carts, inevitably the students' ideas evolve over the course of the project and they need to access information resources at a later stage of their work. Sending individual students to the library takes away from group work time and means that the student is not in the classroom to ask me questions or get immediate feedback. Many students do not have access to computers at home, so researching and typing up an essay can be a daunting task if there are not computers in the classroom for them to use on a daily basis. By donating Chromebooks to our classroom, you are helping students do authentic, project-based learning that will engage them and show them the power of writing. Students would not have to worry about scheduling time in the library or missing valuable class time to research or type their papers. Using databases and the internet for research and typing up formal writing are skills that students will need for their Junior and Senior years, as well as in college or in their careers. My classroom will also be the site of a brand new, school-wide Writing Center this year. Chromebooks will allow students coming in to be tutored the option of revising type-written work on the spot or accessing other resources they might need to work on their writing projects.
