  • Show Me the Technology!

    Funded Sep 30, 2017

We are so appreciative of your thoughtful donation so we can improve our access to classroom technology.

So far, we've used the iPad in speech class to record students' interpretive pieces. Then, they watch the recording with a partner and they critique themselves so they can improve for the next performance. Since the speech class is also an extra-curricular team that competes at tournaments, this activity is especially helpful. The kids get a kick out of seeing themselves projected onto the screen. We may have some budding actors in our midst!

The next way we plan to use the iPad is to record our book talks in sophomore English. I hope to link the videos to our library's website! The kids are excited about this project; it helps bring to life our assignments to give them an authentic goal to reach.

Having our very own dedicated iPad for my classroom makes everything so much better. I can rest assured that what we record will be saved forever!

Thank you again for your generosity.

It's people like you who make me know that education matters!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dieckmann

  • Read for Pleasure Like You Were Meant To: In Comfort!

    Funded Aug 10, 2017

My students and I were so excited to get our plush, high quality bean bag chair in the mail. Dustin, Tyler, Aaron, and Kayli unpacked it and got it ready for use. We situated it in a nook by a big window so the kids get plenty of natural light when they sit in it to read or work on a project.

Our new chair is, unsurprisingly, the most popular seat in the house. I often have kids ask me for the bean bag chair as their incentive for mastering a task. Some students even come in after lunch before 5th hour to read for a bit in the chair. They say they love how cozy it is and how it makes the room feel like a home. That's important to me as a teacher because we all spend more time at school than anywhere else, it seems, and you should feel at home when you spend hours together.

I'm so moved by the success of this project that I'm considering asking for more flexible seating to give more kids the option to move from a traditional desk to a seat that allows for freedom and comfort. The students certainly seem more motivated to read independently when they can relax.

The bean bag chair you gave us has made a big impact on us, so thank you again! We're very grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dieckmann

I have a high aspirations for my students of different abilities: to read independently for pleasure, to think deeply about the world, to connect with each other through collaboration, and to share ideas in innovative ways. Given their many distractions, most students struggle to engage with school, so I spend a lot of time creating projects to appeal to them. If it is authentic and has a real world application, I am likely to consider trying it at least once, especially if it involves art and writing. Currently, my sophomore English students are collaborating on book reviews we will link to our library's catalog. My public speakers have written and presented toasts while my Composition students are drafting personal narratives that traces a change they've noticed in themselves to an unexpected event. Real world application and engagement in a safe environment is the ideal in Dr. D's room.
