I have a high aspirations for my students of different abilities: to read independently for pleasure, to think deeply about the world, to connect with each other through collaboration, and to share ideas in innovative ways. Given their many distractions, most students struggle to engage with school, so I spend a lot of time creating projects to appeal to them. If it is authentic and has a real world application, I am likely to consider trying it at least once, especially if it involves art and writing. Currently, my sophomore English students are collaborating on book reviews we will link to our library's catalog. My public speakers have written and presented toasts while my Composition students are drafting personal narratives that traces a change they've noticed in themselves to an unexpected event. Real world application and engagement in a safe environment is the ideal in Dr. D's room.
