The theme of my class for this upcoming school year is “Know Thyself”. This will be the first year a 9th grade class has ever taken an African American History course at my high school. Having a class set of African American novels would allow students to be able to read about their everyday experiences by way of relatable characters. ”The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, and “Warriors Don’t Cry” by Melba Patillo Beals would not only be an asset to the curriculum, but students would be able to gather a critical analysis of their past as African Americans, to understand the present times in which they live. The book “The Hate U Give” would be an amazing read for my upcoming 9th graders because not only was there a recent movie depicting the book, but every topic in the book relates to their current day. The book “Warriors Don’t Cry” would be a perfect read as well. “Warriors Don’t Cry” is about the integration of Little Rock 9. How inspirational would this be to read an account by one of the young ladies who experienced this first hand! This book could inspire these up and coming 9th graders to realize that just like Little Rock 9, they too can make an impact in their school. Students need engaging books in class where they can see themselves, and be able to relate to the experiences of the characters and people they read about in their books. This project could help enrich their experiences through written word.
