  • Now You're Cooking with Fire- Or Not! 2

    Funded Dec 9, 2011

Thank you all for your generous donations to my project. All the wonderful materials and appliances you helped fund, made their way into my classroom recently. As you can tell by the photos posted, we have been well entrenched in our cooking curriculum.

On a side note, not only are we cooking for ourselves but we are now cooking for those in need. As part of my school's "Charitable Causes" theme for December, we began making sandwiches for a local food pantry that serves the homeless and others in need of food. Since these appliances were received in early January, we have also made cupcakes (see photos) and even banana bread for the food pantry. Once a week, my class along w/ Ms. O's class (see "Spreading The Love" #711229 on Donor's Choose), take the train to Coney Island and personally deliver what we have made. Sometimes we are able to give our products directly to patrons, other times we will deliver items in bulk to be distributed at another time.

Please take a look at Ms. O's project and if you feel inspired, please know that it is for a great cause- helping our kids help others. It's a win-win situation!

    Thanks again-”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Levy

  • The Wonders of Eric Carle!

    Funded Dec 21, 2011

I would like to again thank all of you generous people (and ABC Family) for donating to this wonderful project. As you can tell by the photos posted, the joy these books gave my students started as we were opening the boxes. The looks on their faces as they were taking each one out and turning the pages was priceless! Some of them recognized their favorites; A. shouted, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear. What do you see?!?!!". Others sat with a book on their lap quietly flipping the pages staring at the illustrations.

When I first posted this project, I hoped I could share my love of Eric Carle's books with my students. Fortunately, I didn't have to work so hard- the books spoke for themselves!

We will start our first reading project this week in another class. Since A was so fluent with Brown Bear, he will be reading it to another class and we have a great art project in store! (There is a photo of A and N practicing in our class!)

Thank you all once again for helping me help our children.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Levy

  • "Now You're Cooking With Fire: or Not!"

    Funded Oct 26, 2011

I want to sincerely thank you all for your generous donations that helped fund my project. Because of people and organizations like you (yours), teachers can create a bigger impact on the students in our classrooms. Teaching is not easy, especially the special needs population. We look for any resource to help drive our instruction and increase our student's retention of knowledge. It is widely known that students retain more information if an educator can directly connect instruction to their lives.

By funding this project my students have been able to think of, create and cook meals on their own (with some guidance). Feeding oneself is a universal need- so that "real life" connection was already in place. By offering these students the materials required to prepare meals reinforces self help and independence skills. The look of pride on their faces when they flip a pancake or sit down to drink a juice they just made, is priceless. It is with this self esteem I transition into another lesson, carrying that great feeling of accomplishment, riding the wave, so to speak. With the new materials, appliances, I was also able to introduce my students to a safer way to cook. I know what they have learned will stay with them after they leave me.

In closing, I again want to thank you all for your generosity and, more importantly, for helping me help our children.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Levy

  • Help "Project" the Future to Our Children!

    Funded Apr 26, 2011

I just wanted to thank you all again for helping to fund my project. It is through generosity such as yours that teachers can better educate our students. With education budgets being cut all over, teachers need to find new ways of funding classroom expenses. Resources like DonorsChoose.org put teachers in contact with people wanting to make a difference to the education of our children.

The new projector has made a world of difference in my classroom. Prior to receiving it, I was only able to sign up for the school's projector for 3 teaching periods a week. Now that I have one readily available, I have used it almost daily. My students love learning new things through the use of technology and having the projector readily available has given me the ability to provide them with more technology based instruction.

    We all thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Levy

I work with a beautiful group of high needs, special education students. The facility is a High School/ Occupational Training Center in New York City. These young adults are in either the 8th or 9th grade (14-15 years old). Their disabilities include Intellectually Challenged, Autism and Multiple Disabilities. They face more challenges in one day than most people face in a lifetime, yet their optimism and perseverance never fail to amaze me and make me smile. Each one is so different in their abilities and personalities. Although they are limited, each is so bright in their own way. When they are successful in the classroom, they beam with pride. As their teacher, this keeps me always wanting to do more, engaging them with any prop or tactic to push them to think further.
