  • Help Spanish Speaking Middle Schoolers Access Science

    Funded Dec 29, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. You have helped expand our classroom library significantly. Many of our Spanish speaking students were quite excited to see the Spanish language books added to our shelves. For many students, these books will remove barriers that are making it difficult for them to master the Science content. Science is a universal subject and it is great that I am able to offer even more students access to the rich content.

The books have also been enjoyed by our native English speakers as they try to pick up the Spanish based on the English concepts and pictures that they recognize. It is great to see students practicing their language skills with these fun and engaging books.

Thank you again for helping my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dobler

  • Help Us Access Science Through Differentiated Readers

    Funded Mar 1, 2012

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom. You have significantly added to the scope and content of our classroom library. The students were so excited to see new books on the shelf. The students love looking at the pictures and learning about new Science topics on their own. With these new books, they have access to even more information.

These books will also enable me to pull more engaging and meaningful pictures and readings for use throughout our many units. By directing students to read specific pages, articles, or passages in a picture book, they can have a better understanding. Since I have so many different levels of readers now, students are sure to find something that is at their own reading level. This allows me to enrich for the kids who are ready and reinforce for others.

Thank you for helping my students this year. They are very appreciative.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dobler

  • Curious 6th Graders Need Hands On Light Unit

    Funded Mar 18, 2012

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom. The students really enjoyed exploring with the different lenses and mirrors. They were able to make connections and comparisons between the different shapes and sizes of lenses and the images they produced. This tied back to what they had been reading about.

Lab experiences are very meaningful and important in a Science classroom. Since I had plenty of mirrors and lenses for everyone, students were able to personally manipulate the materials. They were able to indulge their curiosity, ask questions and immediately seek the answers, and build on the Scientific methods we have been working on all year.

Thank you for making our light and sound unit more meaningful with the many lenses and mirrors you provided for us.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dobler

  • Curious 6th Graders Need Basic Lab Equipment

    Funded Nov 15, 2011

Thank you very much for your generous donation to our classroom. These basic lab supplies have enabled my students to do numerous labs throughout the school year this year, and will benefit students in future years as well. With beakers and graduated cylinders, we are now able to measure out specific quantities as we mix chemicals together. We are also able to heat water with the glassware. In addition, the thermometers enabled us to see how temperature really does stay constant during a phase change.

These lab experiences are so significant to the students education. The hands on experiences allow them to solidify and test their understanding of the material we are studying. Thank you for making these lab experiences possible within my classroom this year.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dobler

  • Eager 6th Graders Crave Science Trade Books

    Funded Apr 28, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our Science classroom. My students are avid readers, and they are so excited to see new books in the classroom library. Thanks to your donation, the size of our classroom library has more than doubled. During homeroom and other times, my students rush to the bookshelf to learn about a wide variety of topics.

Especially popular are the Eyewitness books. Students also love reading How Things Work. These books help my curious students answer many questions that they have. We are so grateful to have these resources in our room.”

    With gratitude,

  • Curious 6th Graders Need Hands on Rocks and Minerals Unit

    Funded May 3, 2011

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom. With so many rock and mineral samples, I will be able to create a genuine, hands on experience for my students.

With such a wide variety of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, the students will be able to study the differences between different rocks. They will be able to test and sort them based on various properties.

In addition to rocks, your donation also helped buy testing kits. These kits included the crucial tools, such as streak plates and acid, to test for different properties of the rocks.

Thank you for helping to make this unit a realistic scientific experience for my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dobler

  • Help My Curious 6th Graders Discover the Joy of Fossils

    Funded May 3, 2011

Thank you so much for the donation to our classroom. The many fossil samples will provide my students with a hands on experience within our unit. Last year students looked mostly at pictures of different common fossils, and being able to manipulate actual samples with increase their learning dramatically. It will also be more engaging and exciting for my students.

As they manipulate the fossil samples, the students will be able to find similarities between different eras in geologic time. They will also be able to track the evolution of different creatures over many years. They will be able to look for patterns and trends and form conclusions about how species evolve over time.

In addition to fossils, your donation helped purchase geologic time posters to visually show the time periods they are studying. This is helpful for my visual learners. We also received a video which will engage them in the study of fossils as they hear accounts from actual Scientists.

Thank you so much for your generous donation.”

  • Curious 6th Graders Need Hands-On DNA Equipment

    Funded May 3, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our Science classroom. With these DNA modeling kits, the students will be able to grasp the concept of DNA and DNA replication. These abstract concepts will become clear as students manipulate the models. As we work through our genetics unit, the models will also be used to show different mutations and changes in DNA.

In addition to purchasing the modeling kits, your donation bought several books and posters related to DNA. These resources will help reinforce the concepts we are studying for even more of my students. With books at many different reading levels, many students will be able to access this information.

Thank you so much for making this unit meaningful and hands on for my students.”

  • Curious 6th Graders Crave Hands-On Science

    Funded Jan 21, 2011

Thank you again for your generous donation to our magnets unit. The students recently began using the supplies and have had a lot of fun learning about magnets, magnetic fields, and the relationship between magnetism and electricity. The wide variety of magnets you helped purchase has allowed the students to see the variation in magnet strength. They have also been able to map out the different fields produced by different magnets using the iron filings. Being able to manipulate the magnetic fields themselves is an invaluable experience for these students. Anything I could have tried to explain through readings or pictures could not have come close to actually seeing the strength and shapes of the fields themselves. In addition, the labs next week with electromagnets will make the relationship more meaningful. The supplies will allow the students to build their own electromagnets and experiment with them. My students and I can not thank you enough for these supplies.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dobler

  • Curious 6th Graders Crave Hands On Sound And Light Unit

    Funded Nov 23, 2010

I can not begin to express my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. The science resources you have helped provide to my students will help not only this year's classes but students for years to come. Without these materials, we would have nothing for our sound unit.

As I was planning the unit, the books and guides that you helped purchase were a valuable and crucial resource. I was able to pull readings and ideas from these materials.

When beginning this unit with my students, they were instantly engaged by the beautiful colored pictures I pulled from the story and the great demonstrations that the kits provided. The hands on experiments with water and musical instruments allowed the students to see how the sound waves we were reading about existed in their everyday lives.

My students are equally appreciative of these resources. They truly value the hands-on experiences they are receiving through your generosity. These supplies make the content more meaningful and more exciting for them. Thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dobler

I teach around 90 6th grade students every day. These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our Public Charter School. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system, there is no achievement requirement. With students from every Ward of the District, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and Special Education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in Afternoon Advisory.
