Reading is not a habit for most of my students; it's not something they do for fun. Too often, they see reading as a chore, a bore, or, at worst, a punishment. My students live in the South Side of Chicago, and some of them have so many outside worries that learning can sometimes take a dip in their priority lists. However, they all want to go to college; they want to be successful and work to create a strong future, and for the past four years 100% of our graduating students have been accepted into college. Giving them structured independent reading choices helps get them there. Dynamic choices transform their mindsets about reading. When my students see new books displayed in our classroom, they line up to be the first to look them over and to select titles that speak to them and meet them at their varying levels. Seeing themselves reflected in the literature empowers them, and that's what we're all about.
